Healthy Delivery Food From Jessica’s Recipe Bag

Jessica CookingJessica’s Recipe Bag brings healthy delivery food straight to your door – ideal for hectic, London lifestyles and those in need of a little inspiration in the kitchen.

We have to admit we’ve been a little sceptical of food delivery bags in the past, they’re either full of complicated recipes you wouldn’t want to cook on a lazy Sunday never mind a weekday, or they’re focused on weight loss, detoxing and general unpleasantness.

But when we heard about Jessica’s Recipe Bag, it sounded different, more realistic perhaps, and the recipes on offer, just too tempting. It also helped that the brand originally hailed from Sweden, and anything that helps us attain a healthy Scandi approach to life, we welcome with open arms.

StyleNest opted for the Couples Bag – one bag, three meals for two people. Our bag was scheduled to arrive between 5.30pm and 9pm on a Monday night, which it did, all be it at 8.45pm. This really was the only negative we could pin point from the whole experience, as after a long day’s work we really did not want to start cooking that late in the evening.

Nevertheless, we got to work the following day. Our recipe bag was brimming with healthy goodness, from corn kernels to fresh salad, smoked salmon to top quality chicken and steak. And accompanied by three delicious, well-balance and healthy meal cards, all promising to be on the table in 30-40minutes.

We started with the Hot Smoked Salmon Kedgeree. Instead of using a traditional white fish, Jessica’s supply you with rich, hot smoked salmon giving the classic dish a luxury edge. The little pot of garam masala not only gave the rice an Asian flavour, but a wonderfully deep saffron colour, whilst the fresh parsley and dill added a mouthwatering fragrance.

The dish was ready in the time it said it would be and the instructions were so simple and easy to follow that this has now become part of our kitchen repertoire after just one go. Day one done, and we were hooked.

The second dish was Sticky Lemon Chicken served with rice noodles. Ashamedly it made us realise we’d never actually cooked rice noodles before, instead we always head to the egg noodles to add to stir-fries, so it was nice to see something new in our kitchen cupboards, all be it a simple addition. The dish was again so simple to follow, didn’t take too long and was a very satisfying midweek meal we’ll definitely be making again.

And finally, rather coincidentally we left our favourite meal till last – Mexican Beef Tortilla with Sweetcorn. Instead of making up a thick salsa that most recipes encourage, Jessica’s simple method was to make a radish, red onion and cherry tomato salad, mixed with fresh coriander, lime juice and a touch of olive oil. Add to this a homemade avocado, coriander and lime crème fraiche, and we had a base for our tortillas that was fresh, peppery and creaming. Topped with succulent sirloin steak and salad, this fresh approach to a midweek Mexican feast put our student days of one too many ‘Old El Paso’s’ to shame. The whole dish from prep to table took less than 30minutes and was so tasty.  There was even some of the red onion, tomato and radish salad left over which we added to the next day’s lunch.

Now, you’re probably thinking there has to be a catch, and catches usually come in the form of price tags. Well, Jessica’s offer the couples’ three-day bag for an introductory offer of £29 – that’s less than £5 per person, per meal, not forgetting some lunchbox leftovers. The usual price goes up to £42 for the three-day bag, but even then that’s just £7 per person per meal, and given the fact we regularly spend over £10 for a midweek dinner from M&S on the commute home, Jessica’s works out really rather cost effective.

We’ll definitely be delving into the recipe bag again, even if it’s just to up our recipe repertoire.

Jessica’s Couples Recipe Bag costs from £29 for three days. Recipe bags are delivered on Mondays between 5pm and 9pm, check the website for delivery areas. www.jessicasrecipebag.co.uk
