St Mary’s Inn

St Marys Inn PubA brand new Northumberland pub, StyleNest recently headed to St Mary’s Inn, Morpeth to sample family-friendly fare and an inviting atmosphere.

Veering off the country road up to St Mary’s Inn, the pub is a striking building. Also offering bedrooms should you wish to stay overnight, these are available in standard and deluxe sizes. There is even a dog friendly bedroom for a break which is inclusive of all the family. Stepping into the bar, guests are welcomed into a warming sanctuary to enjoy drinks, afternoon tea, dinner or lunch.

Here for a Sunday roast, we were shown round the pub area, taking in the basic yet simultaneously impressive décor; exactly the atmosphere you’d look for in a chic, country pub. Full of cosy nooks and open space in equal measure, there’s also a separate dining area for private parties and special occasions. We dined in the main pub area, although there are snacks and drinks available at the bar. Plus, a selection of real ales including their custom-made St Mary’s Ale from Tyne valley’s Wylam Brewery.

Proud to offer locally sourced products, these range from locally made soft drinks to fish from the Northumberland coast. Starting our roast with Heritage Beetroot, Goat’s Curd and Pickled Walnuts, this was a refreshing and delicious dish. We then followed our first course with Roast Topside of Beef and Roast Potatoes, Mashed Neeps (turnips to the non-Geordies), Buttered Greens, Honey Roast Carrots and Parsnips, Yorkshire Pudding and Gravy. Substantially sized, true pub grub, St Mary’s can provide miniature portions for little ones. Brewers Malt Profiteroles with Hot Chocolate Sauce to finish and I was stuffed to the brim with this sumptuous yet simple lunch.

Tempted to return for afternoon tea, we are told this is a tasty affair with generous sandwich and scone proportions, perfect for a post-country walk.

The Sunday roast menu is priced at £17.50 per person for two courses and £21.50 per person for three courses.
