Breakfast has long been regarded as the most important meal of the day. We have all heard this phrase now and understand how our bodies need fuel for the day ahead after being asleep all night. It is therefore interesting to see just how many people still ignore breakfast or do it in an unhealthy way. This can often be down to time constraints, poor education on healthy foods, or a lack of proper planning.

There are actually some amazing healthy breakfasts you can try that not only start your day off right but also make you feel great. Making sure to eat a healthy breakfast is also very important if you are trying to lose weight on a personalised diet plan. By eating first thing, you will feel full and not be tempted to spend all morning snacking on unhealthy food.

If you currently do not do breakfast as well as you should, then it is time to make a change! What are the most awesome healthy breakfasts to try out?

Porridge

Porridge is a classic healthy breakfast choice that people have been enjoying for a long time. The secret to its success is the energy contained in the oats that help get you ready for the day. Oats also give out slow-release energy, which means that a bowl of porridge will fill you up until lunch. Porridge is also simple to make, can be ready in just a few minutes, and is inexpensive. To keep it healthy though, make sure to not add things such as syrup to it or buy instant porridge sachets. It is better to make your own from proper porridge oats with some milk. To give an extra bit of flavour, add in a pinch of salt or some fruit.

Why not try fruit smoothies?

Although breakfast is a very important meal to enjoy, for some people, eating when they first get up is not something they feel like doing. Rather than simply skip breakfast though, why not try out a healthy fruit smoothie each morning?

This hits the mark in terms of being good for you and it is also easier to consume than eating something more filling or stodgy. Smoothies are very easy to make, quick to drink, and come packed full of nutrients. They also come in endless varieties, which gives you great scope for being creative – breakfast will never be boring again! From a milk or fruit juice base, you can put in anything from strawberries to bananas, apples, kiwifruits and beyond.

Scrambled eggs on toast

Eggs are a superfood that probably do not get the respect they deserve. Packed full of protein and key vitamins such as B12 and D, the eggs themselves will have you feeling great and raring to go once breakfast is done. By adding toast to the meal, you also get some carbs to help boost your energy levels. To keep this healthy though, make sure to use wholemeal bread for the toast and only a small amount of butter. If you like to jazz things up a little, then you can add a little chilli to the scrambled eggs for something different. To push the boat out even more, adding a little smoked salmon to the dish can get some omega-3 into your diet and make it more interesting. If you need dairy-free breakfast ideas, then you could use healthy tofu instead of eggs here.

Home-made granola

This one takes some prep, but if you get a batch made up over the weekend, it will give you a fast and healthy breakfast to enjoy all of the following week. While breakfast cereals that you can buy are fine, they often come loaded with a lot of added sugar. By making your own granola, you not only control what goes into it but can also have a mix of the things you enjoy there. Making granola is as simple as placing your oats, nuts and seeds in a baking tray and roasting them in the oven. Once cooked and cooled, you can then add in any dried fruit you like. Served with some skimmed milk, this is a healthy breakfast that all the family will love.

Start your day off right

Breakfast is such a key part of any day that it is worth getting right. The trouble is that most of us either skip it or eat unhealthy things such as fry-ups or shop-bought croissants. Both are far from ideal and leave you feeling sluggish all day and can impact on your health long term. It is much better to find a healthy breakfast idea, such as those above, that you can enjoy and that will protect your body.
