Brush it off

Back to good old dry skin brushing which, as I mentioned last week, I’ve been trying to get into. So what’s it all about? Allegedly, French women have been doing it for years – which is why they all have legs like gazelles, sans fur.

But it’s not all about the cosmetic (although it’s meant to improve skin tone, exfoliate and help cellulite). Dry brushing is also used for lymphatic draining – helping your body’s flow of lymph, the stuff that eliminates waste products. Anyway, that sounds like a lot of reasons to do it, so I’ve been trying out some different brushes so you can pick your favourite too.

Green People Age Defy+ Body Brush (£10.95) is a good, no frills (and purse friendly) option to get started with. It has natural bristles, which aren’t too scratchy, and the long handle makes it easy to give yourself a two-minute pre-shower brushing all over. You can use it in the shower too, and it has a handy little rope loop for hanging it up to dry afterwards (essential to avoid moldiness).

Upping the fanciness slightly, M&S Bamboo Long Handle Dry Body Brush (£10) has a double-sided thing going on. One side is (pleasantly ‘brisk’) bristles, the other is nodules that give your bumpy bits a massage. Not bad for a tenner.

Kent Luxury Bath Brush (£47) is a bit more of a luxe purchase but for that you get a long handled brush (and possibly a flannel, judging by the picture) – with a detachable head. What genius. And the pure white bristles are a fancy schmancy combination of invigorating without being sore.

Handle-free, you get a chance to really give your limbs a seeing to, in the manner of someone grooming a pony. The Body Shop has a round body brush (£8), which is perfect for this. Instead of a hand strap, it has a round handle a bit like a doorknob. Lasts for ages without going weird or slimy.

Last but definitely not least, perhaps my top brush from Temple Spa. Giving It The Brush Off (£16) has to be applauded immediately for having a pun name, but it doesn’t stop there. It comes in a lovely waterproof pouch, has a fabric strap to keep it on your hand and delivers an “I’m doing some good here” level of ouch without being too painful. Gazelle legs, here I come.
