Family Holidays in Morocco

morocco beach and marketWe discover family holidays in Morocco; it’s the battle of the City Break vs. the Beach Holiday.

Beach vs. city, it’s the age-old struggle families are faced with every year. City breaks have excitement and adventure, however, you have the chance to lay back and relax on a beach holiday. Morocco’s diverse resorts provide both; Coastal resorts such as Agadir combine beautiful beaches and palm tree lined promenades with Morocco’s ancient traditions, whilst inland cities like Marrakech immerse visitors in its culture with bustling markets and hypnotising snake charmers.

Morocco is a mixture of ancient traditions embracing modern living, where families, couples and culture hungry sightseers can experience its magic. Both Marrakech and Agadir are popular destinations, but which would you choose – city or beach? Let our guide help you decide.

Charmed by Marrakech

A walk through Marrakech quickly awakens your senses. The distinctive Moroccan scents of ginger and paprika pass through the city, originating from the stalls in the lively Jemaa El Fna square. Here you will be enchanted by snake charmers and acrobats as they vie for the attention of passers-by. Little ones will enjoy a glass of freshly squeezed orange juice at one of the many stalls around the square.

Escape the crowds of the medina with a visit to one of the many botanical gardens. Marrakech was once known as the ‘Garden City’, owing to the huge gardens dotted around the city. Children will be mesmerised by the bright blue buildings and different types of catci in the Jardin Majorelle, located outside of the old Medina. The entire family will enjoy an afternoon spent at the Cyber Parc, with its large fountains and views of the nearby Koutoubia Mosque. Large marble benches and computer points around the park make for a fun alternative day out.

When to go: With guaranteed sunshine and less crowds, spring is the perfect time for your Marrakech holiday.

Where to stay: With its crazy river, wave pools and a choice of 10 swimming pools, the Aqua Fun Club in Marrakech certainly lives up to its name. The whole family is catered for here with a kids club, babysitting facilities, a health and fitness spa as well as many other facilities and the ancient Medina close by.

A Beach Holiday with a Twist

Life in Agadir revolves around its golden beaches. Promenades lined with palm trees stretch the length of the bay, creating a haven for beach lovers. Take a camel or horse ride along the sand whilst taking in the views of the Kasbah, which overlooks the beach. This purpose built resort is a popular choice for families in search of a beach holiday with a twist.

Beyond the sandy shores and beach-front hotels there’s plenty to be seen. A popular attraction for families with young children is the Valley of the Birds. Located in the centre of town birds from all over Africa and Europe can be found enjoying the shady ponds. Entry is free to this mini zoo where you’ll also find monkeys, lamas and wallaby’s and once you’ve explored the zoo little ones can run loose on the kids playground. Sightsee in Agadir in style on the special Noddy Train. Children will enjoy the toy train themed journey, which lasts around half an hour taking you around Agadir’s main attractions.

When to go: With over 300 days of sunshine a year, Agadir is the ideal year-round destination for beach holidays.

Where to stay: Located close to the beach and town centre, the Hotel Beach Albatros Agadir is an ideal holiday base. The splash pool is perfect for little ones whilst the adults can lounge around the larger swimming pool. The hotel has three restaurants, each serving different style cuisines to keep fussy eaters happy.
