Velassaru Maldives

Chill Bar VelassaruStyleNest reviewed Velassaru Island in the Maldives. A modern retreat in the Indian Ocean – ideal for winter sun getaways.

Just a short boat ride away to the south of Male lay the stunning, sandy island Velassaru. Upon arrival you are immediately struck by the stretch of white sand around the island – a truly tropical and postcard worthy island. Whilst Velassaru may look traditionally Maldivian at first glance it is a modern, eclectic and contemporary island that attracts couples and families alike.

The decor marries inspiration from local architecture with minimal, sleek design. Simple colour tones with a dash of bright green, vivid turquoise, refreshing yellow run throughout the island. The decor certainly reflects the atmosphere and personality of the island – vibrant, youthful and modern.

Style is at the forefront of Velassaru and for this reason the island seems to attract a young and stylish crowd. Honeymooners and young families are equally at home thanks to the array of facilities and relaxed, contemporary setting.

There are 7 grades of room available from the elegant deluxe bungalow through the luxurious water suite. Each room however has their own private area along the sandy beach. We were fortunate enough to be staying in one of the stylish beach villas complete with large outdoor, garden bathroom. With it’s large decking area and a stones throw away from the sea it was the perfect spot to relax and recharge.

If you prefer a bit more action, poolside has it all. The large infinity pool perched on the edge of the beach is the hub of the island. With large loungers, scattered around the pool under the palms and the chilled background ground music, it’s the perfect spot to lay back, relax and treat yourself to an island cocktail.

Dining is a big part of the Maldivian experience and this is no different on Velassaru. With 5 restaurants and private dining experiences you’ll be spoilt for choice. Sand restaurant offers romantic ocean front dining, whilst Vela and Turqoise offer a vibrant international fare ideal for families. However, it is the private dining experiences that really bring the wow factor to this island.

We were treated to the Satay BBQ  – an experience like no other. With torch flames surrounding the table and chairs made of sand (yes, your table and chairs are made entirely from the beach) it is a romantic and magical setting. Your private chef will introduce the menu for the evening whilst your waiter is on hand to cater for every need. Not only was it utterly delicious but an unforgettable experience.

Whilst relaxing is definitely the order of the day at Velassaru there is plenty on offer to keep the more active guest occupied. From snorkelling trips to island explorations, diving to fishing the island has a host of activities to keep all its guests blissfully happy. The snorkelling trip is highly recommended. Whilst it is a short boat ride away the vast and stunning coral reef is a must-see. Kayaking, windsurfing and diving are all a popular choice with guests.

If that all sounds a little too high paced for you then head to the spa for a truly indulgent experience. The treatment menu is vast and has something to suit all needs and desires. The elegant and spacious treatment rooms, designed for two, are perched above over the water. Pre-treatment head to the hot tub with views stretching across the Indian Ocean and post treatment retire to the tranquil relaxation area. The spa is spacious and elegant, the perfect spot to while away an afternoon.

Throughout your stay there will be no shortage of activities. The Island is also home to a cinema under the stars. Each week the beach is transformed into an open air cinema – simply sit back on your beanbag with a cocktail in hand and soak up the unique and magical experience.

Velassaru is chic, modern and vibrant. An traditional Maldivian Island with a chic international vibe. Whilst it might be a little on the modern side for some, it is the perfect sopt for honeymooners and young families.
