Whether you’re watching from beneath the city skyline at Somerset House or cozying up in the car at the racecourses; there’s a nighttime movie event for all film tastes.

Film4 Summer Screen

You couldn’t ask for a more beautiful open-air setting than London’s stunning Somerset House. Sit beneath the London skyline in what is set to be a film lover’s dream lineup. From the cult Apocolypse Now, to the yet to be released, Jack Kerouac adaptation of On The Road, the haunting Hitchcock classic The Birds to the family friendly Indiana Jones; there’s plenty on offer. A word of warning: you may want to pack blankets and a couple of cushions because those cobbles are not the most comfortable of cinema chairs.

From the heartfelt tale of revolutionist Che Guevara in The Motorcycle Diaries, to the classic Hugh Grant weepie, Notthing Hill; Manchester’s movie scene goes al fresco this summer. Wrap up warm and enjoy the feel good Gene Kelly classic Singin’ in the Rain and pray the heavens don’t open.

Popping up all over the place this summer is The Luna Cinema. Scouting out the most impressive open-air locations is what they do best so whether you’re taking the family to see Shrek at Lulworth Castle, enjoy the King’s Speech in Kensington Palace Gardens or watch Breakfast at Tiffany’s for the umpteenth time at Kew Gardens, it’s sure to be a movie night to remember. Food and drink is welcome, so pack something warm.

More London Free Film Festival
The Scoop, London
Head to The Scoop’s sunken amphitheatre in SE1 for an evening of free film and fun. Screenings include some classics from West Side Story to Great Expectations and kickoff at the reasonably early time of 7.30pm – perfect if you’ve got little ones to get to bed. Entry is free but seats fill up very quickly so head there early and make the most of London’s light evenings.

Plumpton Racecourse put on a movie night that’ll transport you back to the Golden Era. Watch one of the greatest movies of all time, The Wizard of Oz from the comfort of your car as the film’s soundtrack can be tuned in through your car’s FM stereo. Popup Screens

For some cult comedies and childhood classics head to London’s coolest pop-up cinema. Popup is heading to all corners of the city from Hammersmith to Lewisham, Fulham to Kilburn. With rib ticklers like Anhorman and The Goonies, as well as some more serious films Fight Club and Leon – this is the perfect way to spend a summer evening, warm popcorn in one hand, cold beer in the other. The thoughtful people at Pop have even pushed their screenings back a week to ensure the threat of rain is as small as possible.

Jurassic Park at Bristol Zoo

Steven Spielberg’s dinosaur epic is being shown in the most suitable of locations this summer and is a must-see for any dinosaur mad little ones. Sit amongst moving Tyrannosaurus Rexes and long-necked brachiosaurus at Bristol’s new Dino Zoo area, where they’ll be showing the family blockbuster. Take plenty of warm blankets and some waterproofs in case the weather takes a turn for the worst.
