Board games are not only meant for children. The entire family, people of all ages, can play all kinds of board games, working together to defeat an opponent, or, more commonly, try to best one another. Board games are usually played on the table or on the floor and while these setups can be comfortable in their own right, but if you’re a board game enthusiast, chances are you want something more convenient.

What better way to enjoy your favourite board games than with a dedicated board game room that has all the requisites for you to have a fantastic time beating your friends with the luck of the dice on your side. But to build one you need certain elements to make the room function as a proper board game room.

Minimal Furniture

Board games have a lot of small pieces. From cards and dice to little miniatures and Monopoly hotels — we all know the sorrows of losing these pieces and then being unable to properly enjoy the game. This is why keeping the furniture to a minimum could be to your benefit. Other than storage cabinets for the board games themselves, you don’t really need any more furniture in the room, outside of the table and chair centrepieces. In fact, your best bet would be to install wall-mounted cabinets so that you can easily look under them in case one of the pieces decides to roll in that direction. Additionally, the less excess furniture you have, the more space there is for a bigger table that can host larger board games.

Focused Lighting

Lighting is super important to have successful game sessions. Playing in the dark is not only quite difficult, but it can also be a major strain on your eyesight. So, aside from having general artificial lighting in the room, you should also ensure that there is a focused light source above the board game table itself. Use pendant lights or a small chandelier above the table. Platform light fixtures also work quite well, as you can direct them to light up specific areas of the room in case your board game requires more space.

Carpet Flooring

While carpet flooring may be hard to clean and maintain, it pays off with a few very important benefits. First and foremost, it drowns out noise and soundproofs the room. This is especially important if you’re having a tense game session and every tiny sound could keep you from focusing on your strategy to dominating the board. Additionally, carpet has a lot more friction than the smooth surface of wood or ceramic tile flooring. This means that if small pieces do fall and roll across the room, they won’t get as far on carpet flooring as they would on the smoother counterparts. So, if you have someone with butterfingers on your team, you won’t have to worry about them losing their pieces every second. The carpet flooring keeps them from rolling too far out of sight.
