Whether you have just moved houses or you just have the urge to change your entire interior, the chances are high that you’re scrolling through Pinterest or Instagram at some point. We all try to get our inspiration from these platforms and bring it to life in our own home. If you’re lacking inspiration or you simply don’t know where to start, we have got you covered! Keep on reading to find out our top five interior design tips that will transform your house into a home. Because after all, it’s most important to feel at home in your own house, right?

1. Create a moodboard

After all those hours spent on Pinterest scrolling through different interior styles, you probably have an idea or two in your mind about how you want your home to look. But the tricky part is getting this idea from your head onto the table and making it happen. This is where a moodboard comes in handy. A moodboard is essentially a (real life or virtual) board where you collect all inspiration you have found that could work in your home. And don’t restrict yourself to Pinterest only, have you thought about browsing through magazines and cutting out anything that screams you? We promise you, after you’ve created your moodboard it will be so much easier to bring your vision to life.

2. Comfort comes first

Now that you’ve established what interior style you’re going for and you have a broad sense of what you’re planning to do, it’s time to consider comfort vs. style. Don’t we all love a white sofa? They’re very trendy at the moment but before purchasing one, it’s worth considering if it’s practical in your home. Do you have kids? Or dogs? Hmm, you might want to rethink that decision then. In modern homes especially, it can be tempting to purchase all these neat-looking furniture but don’t forget: a home needs to be lived in as well!

3. Ways to make a room seem larger

If you have smaller rooms around the house, there are plenty of ways to make them look larger. Add mirrors to the walls, which gives the room an extra dimension. Another way to do this is by having neutral, light colours on the walls. Whereas it may be tempting to paint all the walls black, a dark olive green or navy blue, these dark colours can cause your rooms to look smaller. If you still want a pop of colour on your walls, don’t worry because you still can. Try to limit the dark colours to one or two walls, instead of going all out and painting all walls (including the ceiling even). This still gives a cosy vibe without making the room look tiny.

4. Sleep is everything

There is one thing that we have come to learn in the past year and that is that sleep is EVERYTHING. Especially if you’re a working parent who is usually busy from early morning to late night, it’s extremely important to get those eight hours of quality sleep. If there’s one thing you shouldn’t be saving money on, it’s the right bed, bedding and pillows for you and your sleeping preferences. It can be quite the investment, but your neck, back and overall wellbeing will improve massively if you buy the right mattress, duvet and pillows. Luxury duvets can transform the way you sleep as it gives you that extra level of comfort. And don’t underestimate the power of pillows! If you’re a back or side sleeper, like a lot of people are, invest in a firm pillow that helps to align your spine. It will save you a lot of neck and back problems later!

5. Less is more

Finally, less really is more, even in interiors. People who have a clean, yet cosy interior usually feel more at peace in their home compared to people who have bombarded their rooms with a bunch of decorations. Whilst accessories can make a home feel more personal and cosy, make sure you don’t overdo it. Hang some lovely prints on the walls, throw some cushions onto your sofa and maybe you can even decorate a coffee corner with a cute table, mugs and your selection of coffees and syrups.
