SPARKLING SEVERAN –  UK’S FIRST BLACK OWNED FIZZY WINE

You can’t rock up at any party, barbeque or social event without a bottle of fizz these days, so if you want to be ahead of the game, why not bring the newest sparkles in town to the table?

I’m pleased to share my latest discovery, Severan, which was founded by renowned music mogul Dumi Orubota, who has worked with everyone from Jessie J to Tinie Tempah. Noticing that there was a significant lack of Black-owned wine, he saw a gap in the market to create a zingy blend of crisp, dry grapes with a decadent presentation that could be associated with Black British excellence.

Severan is proudly founded by a diverse team of Black and Brown backers, and began life in Franschhoek, South Africa, which is Oruboto’s chosen spot for ripening fruit. Using chardonnay grapes from carefully selected vineyards, the base wine is then imported to England. Here, it goes through a second fermentation in Hampshire, before ageing for a further two and a half years, ensuring it reaches peak notes and the perfect acidity.

Having just come back from Portugal, where I spent a few days enjoying Oporto’s famous port, it was quite a treat to be welcomed with the stunning presentation of the Severan sparkling wine which was waiting for me. Arriving in a beautiful crate, the stunning black bottle revealed long lasting bubbles with a crisp taste and almost nutty finish. Drinking it and catching up with an old friend, we like to think we are sparkling wine connoisseurs, and I must admit that Severan topped our expectations.

It’s more expensive than your bog-standard prosecco, but less pricey than my favourite Ruinhard champagne; so if you want to impress and support Britain’s Black and Brown culture at the same time, this legacy brand is definitely one to try. Offering a classy alternative, it’s very easy to drink. Almost too easy!
