The new year is the perfect time to change up your look. The saying does go ‘new year, new you’, after all. This doesn’t mean changing every aspect of your style and overhauling your wardrobe, but rather making small changes that make a statement when put together. Swapping out your usual key pieces can make a significant difference, upgrading your everyday looks to add a chic, fashionable edge.

Statement jacket

There’s nothing more comforting – and easy – than a plain pair of black jeans, boots and a white tee. While this is a classic look, we must admit that it’s not the most exciting. Jazz it up effortlessly by pulling on a statement jacket. This could be anything from an oversized boyfriend blazer, a faux fur number or a longline houndstooth coat. Perfect for keeping you cosy in the colder spring months while adding a hint of flair to your wardrobe, even the most basic of outfits can be transformed with these coats.

Change up your glasses

You may not have really put too much thought into it before, but glasses can really affect how your look comes across. Change it up by adding a stylish pair of round glasses, which are guaranteed to be a trend in 2021. Youthful yet classically chic, what’s not to love about these stylish specs? Choose from rimless, half-rimmed or thin, delicate frames depending on your preference.

Get a new piercing

If you really want to change things up in the New Year, then a piercing is the way to go. Ear piercings are a great choice for those who want something subtle, whereas a nose ring adds an instant out-there edge to your outfits. While this is definitely something to think about rather than jumping straight into it, a piercing is an investment that also requires maintenance but should become part of your everyday style.

Chunky necklaces

Small dainty chains took over the fashion world last year, but 2021 is all about shorter chunky necklaces. Collar necklaces that sit around the base of the neck have soared in popularity, taking over from the previous trend of tight-fitting chokers. A plain outfit gets an instant uplift with the addition of a necklace, so they’re certainly not to be overlooked. Gold seems to be a popular choice, but silver tends to suit those with pale skin and pink undertones whereas gold flatters tanned olive skin.

Experiment with hair and makeup

Normally a nude lippie kind of person? Make a swap for a bold red lipstick and you’ll be surprised at what a big difference it makes. Experimenting with your makeup is a great way to rebrand your style without completely overhauling your wardrobe, plus you can change it on the daily. If you always opt for neutral shades, try out more berry colours for your eyeshadow and vice versa. The best thing about this is if you’re not keen on it, you can simply wipe it away and try again, no harm done!

When it comes to hair, you don’t have to do anything drastic. Swap straight hair for curls, add a hint of colour or go further by chopping off a few inches. Either way, refreshing your hair is a great way to upgrade your style in the new year.

Oversized belt buckles

Belts are often overlooked as a fashion accessory and are mainly viewed as a practicality, but they truly can add that extra edge to your outfit. Oversized western-inspired belts have long been in trend, and they show no sign of going out anytime soon. Pick up a couple of different designs and you’ll see a big difference in how put together your outfit looks.

Upgrading your style doesn’t have to cost a fortune. Simply add a few of the above into your everyday looks and change things up by experimenting with your makeup to make everyday outfits look more put together.
