Products Make You Feel Better

I hate it when people moan about having colds. Especially the ones who proudly announce (usually from their desk, while eating a sandwich) that ‘it’s actually flu’. Unfortunately, last week I became one of these moaners. But even when I’m ill, there are still two small children to amuse, who frankly couldn’t care less if I had anthrax, bless them.

The permanent feeling that I am about to sneeze gave me an expression that was enough to scare the postman. Add to that a nose that would put Rudolph out of business, chalky skin and puffy eyes – and you’ve got a very unattractive picture. So it was time to call in the beauty cavalry. And here’s what helped…

First up is something to clear those passages. I’m not talking about a layer of Vicks – this is much more classy. Aromatherapy Associates Support Breath Essence (£16.50) is a refreshing, antibacterial inhalation essence, which contains eucalyptus, peppermint and tea tree and actually smells nice rather than like Deep Heat. A few drops on a tissue will help you sound less like ‘Bummy’ and more like ‘Mummy’ again.

Now to attend to that sore, red hooter. Lanolips Golden Ointment (£7.99) saved my nose last week – it leaves a silky, protective film to protect you from your tissues. Loving this new retro, handbag-friendly tin, too.

Talking of nose blowing, all that snot is going to leave skin feeling dehydrated and annoyed, so I’ve been loving this mist to calm and balance: Nourish Radiance Refreshing Toning Mist (£8.95), which cools and gives you a much-needed boost when you’re flagging.

A bath is essential when you’re feeling ropey: the steam helps to clear your nose and the soaking will ease aching limbs. I’ve been using Nelsons Arnicare Bath & Massage Balm (£8.49). It contains Evening Primrose as well as my beloved lavender essential oil – and what I love about it is that after your bath you can massage the balm into your skin, too. Nice multi-tasking.

Finally, when I’m feeling ropey and looking pasty, a bit of bright lippie is my favourite beauty trick. I try not to match it to my red nose though, so Clinique’s Chubby Stick in Pudgy Peony (£16.00) is a perfectly distracting shade of pink. Moisturises your cracked, coldy lips too. Get well soon
