Six Degrees Of Curl Separation

My toddler recently offered to brush my hair and looked quite offended when I backed away nervously. The thing is, you can’t brush my hair. As any of you in the same boat will understand, when you have curls, it’s all about separation.

What I’m talking about is soft, loose ringlets that lie in locks that are all separate from each other, not in one frizzy mass. People with straight hair may not understand the effort that goes into creating this look. It needs to look textured but never crunchy, styled but never unnatural. Did you think we just ‘left it’? Pah.

Here are my top products for curl separation – I’ve given you six today just to ensure the headline makes sense… First up is a new find for me: the rich, yummy Macadamia Natural Oil Reviving Curl Cream (£19.95). It smells kind of salad-ish, but in a nice way, and is super-nourishing. My absolute favourite when my hair is feeling parched after swimming.

More salony and a proper styling product is the gel-like KMS CURLUP Curling Balm (£13.25). This is my go-to after a leave-in conditioner or hair oil, because it won’t overload and holds separate curls for ages. Great for a night out.

Another new weapon in my separation armoury is this little lovely: Privé Curl Activating Crème (£16.50). I pull this one out of the cupboard when I’m going for an ‘up do’ – it seems to calm down the frizzes and make my hair much more manageable when I’m trying to style or braid it.

Privé Curl Activating Crème Am I allowed to have favourites? Well I do: Kevin Murphy. There is nothing I don’t like about his hair products: the packaging is fab, the names genius, the formulas amazing. Nothing works quite as well on my hair as his Motion Lotion, (£15.45) which enhances curls, protects with an SPF and smells a bit like heaven. Kylie uses it – I don’t need to say any more. Oh, except that his Easy Rider (£16.50) is also a work of curl separation art.

Finally, something for the morning after, when your pillow or indeed whatever you’ve been doing has messed up your lovely locks. You don’t need to wash them and start again – a few spritzes of Tommyguns Clever Curls & Waves Texture Spray (£6.50) revives, conditions and refreshes. Job done.
