It’s Just So Last Year

Apparently, argan oil is old hat, and this year’s must-have beauty ingredient is rosehip oil. Well, I am quite happy to be a year behind because I am loving argan oil at the moment – and it’s popping up in some of my favourite products.

Argan oil is a super-nourishing oil from Morocco. It’s extracted from the kernel of the argan fruit and has amazing hydrating properties. It really is very different from similar oils I’ve used, and I think this might be down to the fact that apparently (and forgive me as I’m no scientist) the molecules of the oil are really small, making it more readily absorbed. Here are my top five argan products.

Firstly, the pure oil. I go for Lovea’s Certified Organic Argan Oil (£14.99), which is a multi-tasking product I use on both the children and me. It’s got a light, buttery kind of scent and I massage a drop into dry cuticles, onto freshly washed hair (mine and the kids’) or use as a night-time facial treatment.

For hair, I’ve discovered Fushi’s Really Good Hair Oil (£15.95). It blends argan oil with coconut oil, avocado oil and sweet almond oil, along with Ayurvedic herbs. You can use it as a night treatment and shampoo off in the morning, or as a hair masque. A couple of drops work wonders post-washing too, but be super-mean or you’ll end up greasy.

For the body, I also like Douvall’s Argan Bronzing Oil (£32). The name is slightly misleading, making it sound a bit ‘Coppertone’: this lovely dry oil really just has a faint shimmer to it – perfect for summer limb exposure and adding a sheen to your hair.

I love an oil-based cleanser so I was delighted that the fabulous Angela Langford has a new eye make-up remover containing 35% organic argan oil. I Can See Clearly Now (£11.75) shifts waterproof mascara in about two wipes but also softens the eye area rather than leaving that parched, post-remover feel.

Finally, Childs Farm. This new brand has some cracking bath and hair products for kids, which are all free from nasties like parabens, SLSs, mineral oils or artificial colours. My two are both eczema prone and the ‘Hair and body wash for dirty rascals’ (£4.69), which is rich in argan oil, means they emerge from the bath with calm, soft skin. Rosehip oil – you can wait.
