And I have one – it’s autumn. All those gorgeous wishy-washy glossy SPF things I’ve been wearing for the last few months have started to look a bit vague. What I now covet is something that could be described as a ‘stain’, requires a mirror to apply and looks good with a woolly hat. Are you with me?
I’m assuming you are, so I’m just going to launch in with my top five grown-up lipsticks for the impending winter – that all say ‘autumn berry’ rather than ‘Halloween’.
First up is lovely old M&S and their Autograph Ultimate Shine Lipstick in Mulberry (£8.50). I wasn’t sure if I wanted ‘high shine’, as the description promised, but I thought the packaging was pleasingly upmarket and the price pleasingly under a tenner. It’s lovely: glossy, smooth, gorgeously scented and the ‘Mulberry’ shade I chose is plummy without being gothic.
At the other end of the matte/gloss spectrum is Bobbi Brown’s new Creamy Matte Lip Color in Razzberry (£18). Why matte? Well, it’s very fashionable, but it also lasts longer and looks very classy. Which is something I aspire to, obviously. This deep berry shade is very Great Gatsby-esque. Fabulous.
Liz Earle has completed the launch of her Colour range, and the Signature Lip Colour is one of my favourite items in the collection (along with the Skin Tint, which I rave on about to a boring degree). I got my autumnal fix from the Cranberry (£14), which glides on in a sheer, moisturising slick, perfect if you’re not normally a lipstick wearer and are a little nervous about looking too ‘done’.
Now for something a bit earthier. I had a brown lipstick back in my yoof, when it was trendy the first time round, and with the right amount of pinky red in, it is a really flattering shade on my medium/fair skin tone. I love the chunky gold packaging of Clarins Rouge Prodige Lipstick in Fig (£17.50) and the colour stays on like a trouper.
And finally for something I am coveting deeply – this Deborah Lippmann Midnight Confessions Lip & Nail Set (£25), which includes Under A Spell Lipstick, a sheer berry shade with a glossy finish with Bitches Brew Nail Lacquer, a rich opaque mulberry with subtle shimmer. I am salivating. In an autumnal way.
