Hair Tips For New Mums

Many women fall victim to a serious case of hair ‘fluffies’ after pregnancy, so StyleNest are here to help. Who better to ask than top fashion and celebrity hair stylist, Claire Rothstein – here are her top tips on taming those unruly locks.

“Hormone changes mean that your hair falls out less during the pregnancy. You may notice how thick and lush your hair will feel when pregnant, however once you have given birth you start to make up for the hair-loss you should have been having for the past 9 months and it starts to fall out more than usual.

Don’t panic. This absolutely will abide once your hormones have settled down in a couple of months. However, you may notice baby-hairs around your hairline – these are the fluffies. They are incredibly annoying until they have grown out but here are some tips to try and make it a little more bearable and combat the frustrating fluffies.”

Get A Brazilian Blowdry

A Brazilian blowdry is an excellent way to smooth hair and the perfect way to add the proteins that are lost during pregnancy back in. It should also make styling your hair easier and faster.

Cut A Fringe

A fringe is a great way to disguise the fluffies so if you’re  brave and fancy a new look then go for it. A fringe tip is to use a spritz of dry shampoo in it every morning as fringes tend to get a bit greasy but this will stop that and help set the hair.

The Styling Products To Use

You may need a little help controlling the baby hairs while they grow. Here is a list of products that can make life a little bit easier.

  • Batiste Dry Shampoo (£2.99 at Boots.com) for your fringe or just if you generally don’t have time to wash your hair is brilliant and affordable. It will give you a few extra days, volume and texture and freshen up your hair.
  • A good quality strong hairdryer like Parlux (from £49.95 at parlux.co.uk) is a must generally. It’s well worth the investment as it will cut drying time, give you a better result and last for years. Use the nozzle to direct the heat and using a small round brush, smooth the baby hairs down against your scalp. This will make them blend in with the rest of your hair.

If you have particularly stubborn curly, or thick hair, Kerastase’s range of smoothing products are unbeatable. The Oleo Relax Range (from feelunique.com) will smooth all hair including mixed race and afro hair. It is non-greasy and leaves your hair feeling silky smooth. Don’t overload the product though, start with a small amount and you can always add more but you can never subtract. Also, try not to put directly on to the roots.

Percy and Reed’s Smoothed Sealed and Sensational Volumising No Oil, Oil (£14 from beautybay.com) for fine air is a lifesaver. It will smooth and nourish your hair and also add volume so you get the best of both worlds. You can use this on wet hair or on dry hair just like a serum.

Products For Normal Hair
  • Privé’s  Grooming Cream (£15.20 at gorgeousshop.co.uk) is for using when you have blow-dried your hair but still need that bit of extra help to control it. It has enough strength to smooth fly-aways and define texture but won’t leave your hair looking ‘producty’ like some waxes and balms.
  • Shu Uemura Art of Hair Sheer Lacquer (£16.75 from feelunique.com) is the best hairpray you will ever use. Light-weight but with a strong hold, it is easily brushed out leaving no residue. Perfect for extra help when controlling those dreaded fluffies.
