Post partum hair loss, is a hair fall which occurs in 50% of women after having a baby.  It usually begins about 8 weeks after and can last until the seventh month.  The fall out can be frightening, but I assure you that it will stop and the hair will grow back. The reason for the fall is that oestrogens (female hormones) increase during pregnancy.  Oestrogens can prolong the hair’s growth phase and the hair falls out less.  After having the baby, the hormones revert to normal and the hair that was going to fall out during pregnancy, but didn’t, falls out all at once.  Because it is due to hormonal changes, it is not possible to stop it, but you can encourage faster regrowth by massaging (kneading) the scalp every morning for 1-2 minutes before shampooing.  Applying a stimulant Scalp Mask, Philip Kingsley make one, will help even more. Do not worry about it stopping and regrowing – it will.

The primary and most simple way to healthy hair and scalp is to wash and condition daily.  Think how dirty your face gets by the end of a day – and you take your hair to the same places.  Clean scalp and hair is healthier scalp and hair.  When left for 3-4 days the scalp can become flaky, itchy and uncomfortable with a mild tenderness.  The hair itself will be dull (although probably greasy) and lank  looking

A good, healthy balanced diet is necessary and my top foods are:

  • Proteins are most important.
  • First class proteins for hair are meat, fish, poultry, eggs.
  • Proteins are most important at breakfast and lunch.
