The future’s orange

As you may know by now, I do love my home fragrance. Autumn is a funny time of year though – too early to break open anything too Christmassy, but too late for anything floral. I’ve found a solution, and it’s a citrus revelation, if such a thing exists. It’s orange.

Orange hints at Christmas ahead, but the sharpness is fresh enough to stop you feeling like heating up a vat of mulled wine and not leaving the house for two weeks. And it’s a great companion for other scents too. Check out my top five orange candles and just you try and resist getting all citrussy this autumn.

First up is from Orla Kiely. Orange Rind Scented Candle (£25) wins top marks for the design of the glass candle itself – I mean, what’s not to love about this? The colours beautifully reflect the scent inside which is a wonderful combination of orange rind, sandalwood and eucalyptus essential oils, infused with a hint of nutmeg. It’s orangey, it’s warm, it looks great on your mantelpiece: result.

From candle gurus Jo Malone is the fresh as a daisy Orange Blossom Home Candle (£42). With top notes of clementine flower and a heart of orange blossom and water lily, the scent has a warmth and depth provided by orris and balsamic vetiver. It’s lovely and luxurious and your house will smell of it for days.

Sweet Orange & Chilli by Willow and Honey (£27) is a lovely Halloweeny number. I love the spicy notes of this soy candle and it really does permeate through the house. Orange zest is combined with tangerine, bergamot, cassis and neroli, with warm undertones of black pepper and chilli.

As we head through autumn, I’m going to reach for a brand called La Montana from the fabulous MyShowcase. Their Winter Oranges Scented Candle (£35) is the perfect combination of autumnal orange and wintery cinnamon, red apple and clove. Can’t wait to try ‘Alfredo’s Café’…

Finally, from Petits Rituels is By The Fire (£35), which is perfect as we get towards Christmas. This blend is infused with spicy cinnamon and clove, so it does have a definitive festive thing going on, but I love the way that zesty orange and lemongrass give it a zingy edge. And a very high concentrate of essential oils in natural waxes apparently gives a really great ‘scent throw’. Nice work.
