We chat to the one and only Jonathan Adler and talk pottery, ping pong and paddle boarding. The iconic potter, designer and author talks interior tips and how best to refresh your home on a budget.

Adler launched his first ceramic collection in 1994 at Barneys New York. Five years later he expanded into home furnishings, opening his first namesake boutique in Manhattan.

Describe your style in one sentence?

Modern American Glamour.

When did you first know you wanted to be a part of the world of interiors?

When I graduated from college, I tried to work in the entertainment industry. I got fired from one job after another and I knew that the only way I would be successful was if I worked for myself.

You have a brilliant brand ethos, how important is adding a touch of humour to the home?

I love irreverence. Serious design don’t have to be so…serious.

What celebrity home would you most love to style?

Madonna. If you’re reading this, call me!

What is your favourite room of the house?

My ping pong room. My ping pong table is covered in Cole & Son paisley wallpaper and is on Saarinen bases. I play against my hubby Simon Doonan every night, and I win every night.

Where does your inspiration come from?

Everywhere. I keep my eyes and my mind wide open.

What advice would you give our readers who are decorating their first home?

Buy a chandelier that is larger than you think you need and more expensive than you think you can afford.

What’s the best way to get a designer home on a budget?

Save. And put your lights on dimmers – everything will look more glamorous than it already is.

What’s the best way to update an old piece of furniture?

Move it. There’s not one perfect placement and you’ll see it in a new light. Literally.

What interior trends will we see emerging this season?

Grey, grey, grey as the neutral du jour and brass, brass, brass as the metal du jour.

When you’re not busy working, what do you do to unwind and relax?

TV, read, and paddle board. Not all at the same time.

Who is your biggest inspiration?

My holy trinity is Bonnie Cashin, David Hicks, and Alexander Girard.

What’s your motto?

Any style faux pas?

Taxidermy. It’s just sad.
