With restaurants in London’s Shoreditch and Brixton, Bukowski Grill is our current go-to when in need of a damn good burger.
Situated on the top floor of Shoreditch’s trendy Boxpark and serving up burgers, Bukowski Grill could not be more hipster if it tried. Thankfully, the food lives up to it’s East London name. So good in fact it had us going back twice in two weeks – shame on us.
The idea is simple; a choice of burgers from the plain and simple ‘Purist’ to a gourmet style ‘Burger of the Month’. The restaurant itself is more of an upmarket burger joint; retro booths with heavy wooden benches line the narrow space, with one single chef flipping the patties up top.
We ordered the ‘Purist’ burger – a straight up patty using high quality, tasty and tender Hereford beef, topped with tomatoes, lettuce and mayo. Of course, we added cheese – a nice hefty slab of Double Gloucester – because quite frankly a burger just isn’t a burger unless it’s a cheeseburger. What we loved about the burgers is that you’re asked how you’d like it cooked. So, if like us you like it bang on medium rare, it’ll come that way.
Next up were the chips. Available to order small or large, these chips come triple cooked in beef dripping. I think it’s safe to say they taste pretty good. Crispy on the outside, fluffy on the inside, triple cooked yet not greasy in the slightest, we’re not sure how Bukoski does it.
We also ordered the Waldorf coleslaw in an attempt to make things a little healthier. Crunchy, fresh, a little sweet from the apple and topped with walnuts, it created a good balance amongst all the meat and chips.
Drinks-wise, Bukowski’s has some great craft beers such as Leiathan Ruby Ale, as well as a delicious homemade lemonade to wash it all down with.
All in all, Bukowski’s make simple, good food that makes you happy. Go here if you need cheering up, go after a breakup, a bad haircut, or if you simply must have a burger. Just, go.
