Even better than the real thing

Fakery isn’t really my first port of call when I’m looking for the solution to a beauty dilemma. After all, who wants to look like Instant Whip when they could go for double cream? Actually, I’ve just watched TOWIE. The answer is: a lot of women. But not us…

That said, there is a place for faking it. When your dilemma can’t be solved any other way – and when the illusion is gorgeously convincing. With that in mind, here are my top five great pretenders.

First up – false nails. Why would you? Well, that’s what I thought until my passable talons were ruined by a run-in with a cheese grater, half an hour before a ‘do’. So I dug out an imPRESS Press-On Manicure (£8.99), false nails that comes in a cute box shaped like a polish bottle.

Seriously, they are easy. And even more seriously – they are really, really natural. As the packaging says: ‘This changes everything’. A possible overstatement, but something to bear in mind.

Now for some hair fakery. Not a weave, this little cracker – Love Hair Extension Braid (£5.95) – is a stretchy band of plait that you can use as a tie for a bun, or as a hairband. I winced at it lying in the packet. Then I put it on and felt like I was milking a goat on an Alpine slope. In a good way.

Love Hair BraidFaking a glow is so much easier these days, especially with gorgeous products like this: Melvita’s ProSun Gradual Self-Tanning Moisturising Gel-Cream (£20). It’s a DHA-free tan that builds up to a really natural glow – you can take it right up over your face too. Lovely.

False lashes just say ‘faff’ to me – especially the putting on part. We’re big Shavata fans here at StyleNest, and it turns out they know a thing or two about lashes as well as brows. Pop by a bar on the way to a glam event and get a cluster of three lashes from £8. A really subtle prettifier.

Now for some veneers. Not really – how about this instead: Bourjois Smile Enhancing Gloss (£8.99). It has two ends: one containing a tooth-brightening effect gel with blue coloured pearls that you apply to your gnashers. The other end has a gloss with pigments to enhance tooth brightness. It’s you – but better. Hoorah!
