Lucy Quartermaine

I read that your daughter inspired you to go back to jewellery design. Are any of your pieces inspired by her?

There are many pieces that have been inspired by my daughter, all my children actually. To be honest, there have been many emotive moments throughout my life – finishing university, my wedding day and the birth of my children – that have found themselves to be inspirations behind some of my favourite pieces.

The Tear Drop Collection is inspired by emotional memories that have made me the person I am today. Tears of joy, happiness and sensitivity are among some of the feelings captured in these designs and can be seen in shape of the pieces.

Which collection is your favourite, and if you can say, what is your favourite piece?

This is a hard one. I see them all as my babies! All unique and different from one another and all encapsulate different emotions.

I did however really enjoy designing our recently launched Royal Pearl Collection. It celebrates the longest serving female monarch in history with a collection inspired by the Queen’s most memorable jewellery motif of pearls. It calls upon the Queen’s love of nature and the natural world with some of the shapes being inspired by lilies, the Queen’s favourite flower.

Take me through a day in the life.

Most mornings I start my day at 6am in readiness for my run. By waking up a bit earlier I can have that all important time before the day begins, especially as mornings are usually quite hectic as a working mum of three!

After ensuring everyone is where they should be, I head to the office. I love every second of what I do and wouldn’t change it for the world but appreciate that without my team behind me I would be lost! It’s so important to me that everyone is content and knows what they are doing, so by making sure we are having daily catch-up meetings it strengthens the bond between us- we are all like family!

The rest of my day involves creating new design ideas for my wonderful customers – it’s truly the best part of my job.

What jewellery trends should everyone be watching out for?

The need for our jewellery to spark joy is stronger than ever. While the trends cycle turns more slowly in jewellery than in fashion, there is no denying the shift towards our UNIQUE Collections.

The demand for gold layering has increased, so we have extended our gold collection by 30%. We can’t wait to share these new designs with you in the later part of the year!

What can we expect next from Lucy Quartermaine?

I can’t say too much but definitely be on the lookout for more unique pieces in the later part of the year!

Are you a more is moreor less is a borewhen it comes to accessories?

More is more! But I would say it’s definitely a personal design preference. I have a wide range of designs for all different tastes, whether you like that one stand-out style or (like me) stack, layer and band at every opportunity!

Who or what inspires you

I draw inspiration from the world around me and the way mother nature appears. Whether it is a water droplet, melting snow or floral views. The inspiration for many of my pieces comes from the way fluid elements move, the hypnotic way that water falls is just beautiful. I draw inspiration from a rainy day and the organic shapes created as the water tumbles down windowpanes.

Who is your ultimate muse?

As a child, I would often visit art galleries with my mother, and was drawn to the works of Van Gogh, Picasso and Dali. Dali’s ‘Persistence of Memory’ left a particularly strong impact, with its melting clocks – transforming the mundane into something surreal and sublime. The deconstruction of everyday, solid objects into melting, fluid forms resonated with my fascination for liquid in motion.

Are you a water sign by any chance?

I am indeed! A Cancer sign!

A cancer sign represents one’s roots, parental home, early environment, and the more nurturing parent. Cancer is family-focused and household-oriented. Which I would say is one hundred percent accurate.
