A new study by UK bed and mattress brand, Mattressman, has taken a look at the music that we’re listening to before bedtime, to find out which popstar is sending the world to sleep.

The team at Mattressman looked at playlists on Spotify that included the title ‘sleep’ ‘bedtime’ or ‘sleeping’ in the title, and exported the playlists to view which songs had been featured the most across these, which artists had been featured the most, and also, which albums.

Turns out, Billie Eilish is the musical icon that is sending the UK to snooze, with songs such as ‘when the party’s over’ and ‘Happier Than Ever’ featuring across the 5,706 songs analysed in the study.

The top ten artists featured, who are sending the world to sleep with their voices, include:

  1. Billie Eilish
  2. BTS
  3. XXXTENACION
  4. Taylor Swift
  5. Lewis Capaldi
  6. Olivia Rodrigo
  7. Tate McRae
  8. Adele
  9. Harry Style
  10. James Arthur

Furthermore, it’s BTS’ ‘HOME’ that was the overall most featured song, and XXXTENTACION’s album.

We put out a Twitter request asking for people who listen to music to fall asleep to come forward to talk about why they listen to music before bed, and how they think it helps them fall asleep quicker. Here’s what they had to say:

Jade Thomas, who currently works as an Office Manager at Pure Property Finance, says that Adele is her go-to nighttime artist, who is the world’s eighth most listened to artist at bedtime. She says:

“I put my headphones in at night to block out background noise. I live on a busy road near town, so often I’m woken up with party animals on their way back from a night club, or honking cars. I don’t have a specific genre that I listen to, but I do tend to avoid my day-to-day music so that it doesn’t excite me while I’m trying to get to sleep. An artist that I really enjoy listening to at bedtime is Adele; I know she’s a very popular artist, but not someone that I necessarily listen to day-to-day, and her voice is so soothing!”

Meanwhile, Emma suggests to not listen to any Little Mix before bedtime..

Emma Hull, Public Relations Specialist at Liberty Marketing, says:

“My sleeping playlist was probably one of the playlists analysed; it’s titled ‘sleep’ and includes the likes of Olivia Rodrigo who I am loving at the moment, as well as George Ezra, who I’m surprised didn’t make the top ten. I find their voices are easy to listen to at nighttime without getting so pumped up that you’ll be rocking away in your bed – listening to Little Mix or Beyonce would make me want to go out-out, not go to sleep!”

So, is listening to music at night actually good for us? Well, according to WebMD, the type of music that you listen to makes a huge difference. “Reputable studies find that music with a rhythm of 60 beats a minute helps people fall asleep” says Breus. “As you are falling asleep, your heart rate begins to slow and starts to move toward that 60-beats-per-minute-range.”

Do you listen to music before bed? If so, we’d love to know what type you listen to as well as which artist, and why you choose to listen to music instead of falling asleep naturally.
