Whilst this wasn’t my first visit to The Curtain, having attended a Penhaligons event there last year. It was, my first stay, but suffice to say, it won’t be my last. A short walk from either Liverpool Street or Old Street, The Curtain does have a very East London vibe, but once you’re cocooned in your suite, you could literally be anywhere. It feels like it’s own little world.
I arrived on a wet and blustery Sunday hot on the heels of Storm Dennis after a full on day at London Fashion Week. I was greeted warmly and courteously by staff. Check in was fast and efficient and I headed up to my suite to rest and recharge before dinner at their rooftop Lido restaurant (more on that later).
The suite manages to be both cosy and spacious and comprises; a lounge area, complete with sofa, tv, Peloton cycle for spinning, bar area with a dedicated martini spot (how I wish I’d taken up the offer of that martini). The lounge leads into a spacious bedroom, also with a tv but resplendent with a beautiful roll top bath overlooking the East London streets. As a fully fledged bath lover this was a true delight for me but fear not, non bath lovers, there is also an enormous shower in the en suite bathroom.
The décor is edgy but tasteful with dark wood lending itself to the cosy, cocoon like sense of the suite. The bed was one of the comfiest I’ve ever slept in and I slept like a baby. Now then, onto the food…
The Lido, situated right at the top of the building also houses, as the name suggests, an outdoor pool, obviously Storm Dennis interfered with my night time dip plans, but I’ll be back in warmer months to rectify that. The Lido is one of two restaurants within the hotel, the other, Red Rooster is more meaty and for a vegetarian like me, The Lido was a more obvious choice. I had the delicious vegan burger with sweet potato fries, ALL the carbs after an exhausting day pounding the ground in the name of fashion. This was washed down with one of the multiple, excellent cocktails available here and it was back to the room for that all important hot soak in the tub I’d been promising myself all day.
After a glorious nights sleep, a smoothie, strong coffee and a delicious breakfast (I highly recommend their granola) it was back to the grit and glamour of London Fashion Week for me but significantly more recharged than when I’d arrived.
