Every travel kit should have adequate backup of data or the memories would be lost forever!

Travel photos go a long way in recollecting memories and for sharing it with friends and family. The moments of the trip cannot come back but with adequate backup, one can certainly preserve memories to look back upon those moments.

First and foremost, one should have two copies of the photos and in two different areas. Since photos are commonly stored in JPG format, one can pack in 2,288 images clicked through a 10-megapixel camera in an 8GB card while one can store 1,040 images on a brilliant 22-megapixel camera within the same card.

Even with high resolutions, it is advisable to opt for different storage devices for retaining the photos especially for the trip duration.

Here is how one can backup photos during travel:

  1. Memory Cards as Portable Drives

Although memory cards are an integral part of your DSLR camera, they also work as specific portable drives, especially for facilitating file transfer quickly and easily. It is advisable to transfer all trip photos to cards that boast of higher capacity and back them up on an equally bigger memory card. Pro photographers usually have a number of memory cards to handle their extremely large files in RAW format.

  1. Back Up on a Laptop

Having a laptop during a trip has a lot of advantages. One can simply have a backup of your photos on the laptop and then work around the memory cards. This ploy also helps in keeping two photos of a type in two different places.

  1. Back Up to a USB Flash Drive

With the help of an encrypted and secured US flash drive, one can certainly keep a handy backup of all trip photos. One can easily get photos from the memory card of the camera to the US flash drive!

  1. Back Up to the Cloud

The problem with the afore-mentioned steps is that the photos are still with you during the trip. This means that you could lose your camera, laptop, and portable drive anytime and anywhere! It could be through theft, fire or water damage, or due to some other reason.

One certainly can keep additional copies of the photos on the cloud or the “remote computer” so that it is securely accessible from different places even after the trip. One can easily upload the photos by FTP or through existing cloud account to access them later! One can opt for Google Drive (up to 15 GB), or even the dynamic Dropbox (up to 2 GB), or even opt for the immensely popular Amazon’s Cloud Drive (unlimited storage for Prime members).

  1. Back Up To/ From Your Smartphone

Your smartphone provides a direct interface to data storage options especially through the camera’s built-in Wi-Fi transfer feature that will keep a copy of the photos off your camera. The smartphone is carried off and on by nearly one today, and the device can store pictures temporarily.

Conclusion

Before you embark for your trip, get adequate enough storage to handle photos by deleting old photos from the drive or the smartphone. Back up regularly if possible to a memory card or a USB flash drive if possible.

For wireless backups on the other hand, make sure the data is being transferred through Wi-Fi and not through the local data internet. Hopefully these tactics can help you preserve photo memories and their backup efficiently.
