Munich is the capital city of Bavaria and also the biggest city in the German state. Along with Berlin and Frankfurt, it is one of the most interesting and exciting cities to visit in Europe, particularly if you are looking for a short city break destination.

If you are planning on paying a visit to Munich any time in the near future, you will need to think about more than booking the perfect hotel and sorting out Munich airport transfers. You will also need to think about the attractions you want to visit so that you can be sure to fit in all of the things you would like to see and do.

The Must-Sees of Munich

No trip to Munich is complete without trips to these popular attractions:

Marienplatz

Marienplatz, also known as Marien Square, is Munich’s central square and is home to the city’s New Town Hall. It is the perfect place to start a tour of Munich’s beating heart, where you can see old and impressive buildings and churches, as well as famous attractions like the 100-year-old Glockenspiel clock. When the Glockenspiel chimes, at 11 a.m. or 12 p.m. is somewhat of an event, due to the fact that is features 32 life-sized figures who re-enact events from Bavaria past.

Dachau Concentration Camp

Understandably, many tourists to Munich shy away from visiting Dachau, as they worry that it will be just too much for them. However, it is well worth making the journey to the concentration camp, which is located 10 miles to the northwest of the city, where you can follow the path that prisoners would have taken upon arrival at Dachau and see the memorials to those who were imprisoned there. Sure, it’s a very poignant experience, but it is one you will never forget and one which will give you an insight into the horrors that man can inflict on, man.

Hofbrauhaus

You simply cannot visit Munich without taking a trip to one at least one of its many excellent brew houses, and Hofbrauhaus is probably the best of a great bunch. As well as sampling some of the best German beer you are ever likely to taste, you can also take a tour of the brewery, accompanied by some lovely oompah music as you go.

Frauenkirche

Probably the most recognisable of all Munich’s landmarks, the Catholic Cathedral of Our Blessed Lady is a huge building that can seat as many as 20,000 parishioners. On a visit to the church, you can simply marvel in its impressive Gothic architecture, which dates back to the 1400s, or you can climb to the top of its towers where you will be rewarded with spectacular views across Munich and the Bavarian Alps.

Vitualienmarkt

A stone’s throw from Marienplatz, you will come across Viktualienmarkt, which is the biggest, best and busiest open-air farmer’s market in Munich. Packed with over 140 brightly colored booths and some of the most amazing pastries, fruits and flowers you are ever likely to find, it is the perfect place to spend a couple of hours soaking up the atmosphere.

Once you’ve had your fill of these great Munich attractions, you will have no trouble finding even more interesting things to do in the city!
