Obonjan

post-forest-lodge-2Obonjan, a previously inhabited island, launched this summer to bring Croatia its newest festival addition. But forget preconceptions of the word festival, Obonjan is different. It is a hub of creativity, a synergy of wellness and festival activities spun together in a web of natural Croatian beauty.

The island itself is just off the coast of Split and easy to access – just a mere 30 minute boat ride from the port town of Sibenik. Crystal turquoise sea surrounds the forest covered island which is spotted with amphitheatres, rustic restaurants, yoga pavilions and beach bars.

The accommodation does is safari meets glamping – cabins and tepee style bell tents are scattered amount the pine forests. No bringing your own tents or stuffy sweating, each of the lodging options includes proper beds and air-con! And for those who want to upgrade, the four person cabins have a mini fridge, private terrace and en-suite bathroom.

There is a weekly schedule of events that ranges from yoga, meditation, talks, presentations, cinema screenings, holistic workshops, astrology and of course the island couldn’t be without some great featured DJ sets. Co-founder Dan Blackledge, the brain behind Croatia’s Unknown and Hideout festivals, definitely pulled some strings with Obonjan.  Masters of their profession are flown in to teach and play, and highlights this summer included VOGA and Giles Peterson. Throughout the day there is the option to head to the hilltop pool or beach bar and at night, people meander across the island to the forest bar where DJS play into the early hours, nestled between pine trees, snug under the stars and with the added touch of the lapping ocean.

There are a number of creative places to dine including BOK which serves international style tapas and The Zen Den’s healthy café serving all types of raw, gluten free and vegan nourishment. The spa has a diverse range of treatments on offer ranging from massages to reiki and body healing.

The island is open for just over two months a year and was a hit this year! To make sure you grab a spot we recommend booking early. Prices for bell tents start from €72pppn and lodges from €97pppn. For more information check out their website www.obonjan-island.com
