We live in a society where we experience more ways that our posture can be affected. Through our work and personal life balance. If we don’t begin to take care of ourselves, we could end up with further health issues in the future. Here’s a quick low down on why posture is so important, and why you need to think about it today.

Is it important?

Your posture ranks just as high when it comes to good health as exercising and eating all the right things. Without good posture, you won’t be able to be physically fit and active. Which could cause many more health problems to do with your weight and general health. It’s the one thing we are least likely to think about. However, the great news is that you can actively do things to improve your situation.

What problems can bad posture cause?

Poor posture can cause many problems. It can make you feel tired and lethargic. You can feel that your muscles are tight and even stiff at times. They may even ache. In some sever cases you could develop something called a repetitive strain.

How do we develop poor posture?

It can happen in many ways. The most common are through our choice of job and workplace. For example, working at a computer desk all day or at a checkout at a supermarket. This is because you are huddled over and don’t get many opportunities to stretch and sit up straight. Although you could do that, we just naturally slouch. This can develop a repetitive strain. In some cases, people with Repetitive Strain Injuries can make a claim against their employer for work conditions. We can develop bad posture by the lifestyle choices we make. We are a society which is happy to sit in front of the TV for hours on end. We rely more and more on technology and our smartphones to be our connection to the outside world. We are more likely to choose to drive somewhere than walk. It is down to the way we live our lives.

How can we improve our posture?

There are a few different ways that we can improve our posture. Keeping our weight down and exercising regularly is one place to start. Standing straight and sitting down with a straight back are also ways you can still go about your daily life while improving your posture. We will carry on watching TV, so do that sitting with your back straight. The same applies to your job. If you happen to be sitting over something or working with your head down, stretch and stand. Or work on your seating position so that you have a straight back. Make sure you pay attention to any injuries or problems you have. It’s always advisable to get things resolved than put up with issues. If you can straighten up yourself, then you are on the right track.

You can improve your posture by the position you sleep in. By sleeping on your side with your knees bent and your head supported by a good pillow. Also making sure you lift things by bending your knees and not your back.

It’s all about thinking how you do things going forward and making active changes to improve your posture. You will be thankful of all this in the future. I hope this has made you think more about whether you have good posture.
