RUMI X is a eco-friendly collection of activewear inspired by yoga practice but also suitable for many other sports. What is the story behind the brand and the philosophy behind it, and why did you decide to go eco-friendly?

I wanted to design something beautiful but also something that helped progress towards the sustainable movement. It started from a passion for yoga, but also transcended into a lifestyle of being active and seeking out wellness in our lives. The idea was to create a line that’s comfortable for everyday active living and made from materials that no longer served their purpose. So we set out to find waste materials that can be made into high-tech fabrics.

Can you tell us a little more about your eco-friendly fabrics? How did you decide to use water bottles and coffee grinds to make them?

Our eco-friendly fabrics are made from recycled plastic bottles and upcycled coffee grounds. Eco-friendly fabrics are widely available around the world and we’ve done our research to make sure we used accessible fabrics which use less energy to produce and were geographically close to reduce our carbon footprint. By repurposing the coffee grounds and recycled plastic bottles, we actually use 50% less energy than traditional fabrics!

We work with our suppliers to ensure its high quality, comfortable and with high-performance functions such as 4-way stretch, breathability, and moisture wicking. Eco-friendly fabrics are essentially recycled yarn so they can be made into any high-tech sportswear.

Where does your design inspiration come from for your collection?

Our collection is designed to make people feel good. The inspiration comes from everyday movement and being comfortable throughout the day. The eco high-quality soft and stretchy, breathable material is foremost and we ensure that the designs are wearable pieces that express our individuality and uniqueness.

What advice would you give any budding entrepreneurs out there looking to set up their own business?

Get ready for a ride, its not an easy feat! You definitely wake up feeling motivated and passionate everyday about what you’re doing. So you really have to believe in your cause!

What challenges have you faced along the way, and what have the high points been?

One of the many challenges is educating the public why its important to buy sustainable and eco-friendly products J It’s actually the most rewarding when we meet other like-minded individuals that support this cause and are really happy that we’re doing this.

As a certified yoga teacher, what is your own daily fitness routine? Any particular fitness tips you can share?

I wake up and do my own yoga practice, take my dog out for a walk to get some fresh air before I go to work. It’s a very therapeutic morning and I feel like it sets the tone and I give myself some “me” time before I take the day on.

Other than yoga, how do you look after your own health and wellbeing on a daily basis?

I drink plenty of water each day, about 1.5L, try to eat clean by cooking and get 8 hours of sleep each night. It’s the simple things that go a long way.

Do you have any guilty pleasures that you like to indulge in?

Yes, I love snacking on chips!

What is a typical day for you at RUMI X, if there is one!

Each day is very different as I’m taking on whatever comes my way.

How would you spend your perfect day off?

Hiking and going to the beach with my pup!

How would you describe your own personal style? Any favourite designers or brands that you like when you’re not wearing RUMI X?

I’m from California, so I dress very casual. If I’m not in activewear, I’ll most likely be in a loose sundress or t-shirt and shorts! I do love girly pieces as well, I love American brands such as Rebecca Taylor and Australian brands like Camilla and Marc

You’re are now based in Hong Kong. What are your favourite travel destinations and what would you recommend StyleNest readers do there?

Koh Samui, Thailand for relaxation and delicious food / South of France for the beautiful coastline and breath taking views / Bali, Indonesia for the sunshine, vibes and gorgeous villas!

What is next for RUMI X? Any new eco-friendly fabrics in the works or new designs to look out for?

We’re currently working on developing products with our new fabric, made of discarded crab shells! We are also looking to expand into men’s and children’s lines.

Each pair of RUMI X leggings comes with its own motivational quote printed inside. What is your own motto for living a healthier, fitter, and happier life?

“Let yourself be drawn by the pull of what you really love. It will not lead you astray.” – Rumi
