First steps and new finds

Helena and LylaAlthough the Olympics and Paralympics are long gone, Theo has garnered enough inspiration from this Summer’s activities to start walking at a mere 8 months old. His impressive categories include couch-surfing, standing unaided, a stair climb, and my personal favourite, the three step wobble.

In the meantime Lyla has rather appropriately re-named a tediously well-known nursery rhyme as ‘Blah-Blah Black Sheep’ and taken to dramatically shouting ‘a-choo’, whilst wearing three tutus at once. The two combined provide a small snapshot of the chaos that is our living room at present. Life is definitely never quiet.

With the Alnwick Food Festival taking place we headed across to the marketplace on Saturday to see the festivities in full swing. ‘French Oven’, are an independent artisan bakery based in Newcastle’s Grainger Market that I’ve been meaning to visit for a while now. As they were exhibitors at the Food Festival this seemed the perfect opportunity. Coming across a stall laden with baked goods galore it was very hard to choose between the sumptuous offerings on display. With scones, speciality breads, French Macarons, Viennese swirls and more for the taking this was a definite highlight of the weekend’s events. We left armed with treats such as a Frangipane (quite a luxury being 80% almonds), a Mediterranean loaf filled with sundried tomatoes, herbs and garlic cloves and a light rye bread with black olive and rosemary. The piece de resistance was a Canelle Bordelais, slow cooked cake from the Bordeaux region. Deeelicious.

Talking of new finds, I have been pondering my outfit for a much-needed girl’s night out in a few weeks, the hen do of one of my oldest friends, Stephanie. Partly because I am her Maid of Honour and partly because our last night out together was when footless tights were at a style high, I’m hoping to pull a fantastic outfit out of the bag. I wrote an article recently for Vintage and One of a Kind about up-cycling your A/W wardrobe and the tips I gathered for this were from vintage website www.lockieandlulu.co.uk. I’m a big one for a statement necklace and have found the perfect piece I was looking for in their glittering online emporium.

Now to the next post-Olympic event, cocktails, dancing and high heels- hopefully without a one, two or even three-step wobble.
