Delight the kids this weekend with this deliciously retro recipe for a chocolate and cola float. Inspired by the great soda parlours that used to be dotted around the USA, this cola float is ideal for serving up at a little one’s birthday party or even as a Sunday afternoon treat. We may not have soda parlours in this country, but we can all enjoy this sweet treat at home.
Serves 4
Preparation time: 10 minutes, plus chilling
What you’ll need:
- 250ml (8fl oz) double cream
- 1 litre (1¾ pints) cola (preferably the old-fashioned type)
- 2 tsp vanilla extract or paste
- 8 scoops of dark chocolate ice cream
- 100g (3½oz) maraschino cherries,
- plus a few extra to decorate
- 25g (1oz) dark chocolate, grated
What to do:
- Chill 4 tall sundae glasses in the refrigerator. When ready to serve, lightly whip the cream until thickened slightly but still sloppy. Put to one side.
- Put the cola, vanilla, ice cream and cherries into a large blender, in 2 batches if necessary, and use the pulse button to blend together.
- Pour into the chilled glasses, spoon the cream on top and sprinkle over the grated chocolate. Decorate with a few maraschino cherries for a little touch of kitsch and serve immediately.
Top Tip: It is best to use the pulse button when blending the cola float, as it will fizz and froth a lot.
