Smells Like Summer

I don’t know about you, but when it’s summer, I want my house to smell summery. You can keep your mulled wine and cinnamon – I want to let the sunshine in. But the problem is, I’m not that keen on floral scents.

So I’ve been sniffing my way through a load of home fragrance to try and work out what really says ‘summery’ without saying ‘bouquet’. Thankfully, I’m not the only one who doesn’t want their house to smell like Interflora has just been. Here are my top five.

First up is a diffuser. I’m a convert to these – especially in bathrooms where you want a constant scent but can’t leave a candle unattended. Morris and Co’s Strawberry Thief Oil Diffuser (£24) is a cracker. It sits looking fabulously old fashioned on a bathroom shelf and gives out a wonderful subtle scent with top notes of fresh red berries, mandarin, bergamot and pepper. No fussy florals here.

Another diffuser I’ve got in my house this summer is Noble Isle Rhubarb Rhubarb. Fine Fragrance Reed Diffuser (£39). It describes itself as a ‘bittersweet fragrance reminiscent of the dewy wake-up of a Yorkshire spring’, with notes of juniper berry and ‘muddled rosemary’. A bit fruit, a bit spicy. Lovely.

Now onto some candles. Malin+Goetz Geranium Leaf Candle (£37) is a kind of anti-floral floral which reminds me of my grandma’s old greenhouse – in a good way. It’s super fresh, with notes of green apple, geranium (obviously) and coriander.  I’m a bit in love with the packaging, too.

I’ve featured a Life With A View before – they’ve got a really interesting, contemporary take on home fragrance and their candles are such great quality. For summer I’ve chosen A View of New York – The Loft (£40) which reminds me of a hot few days I spent over there on my honeymoon. Think chamomile and thyme to bring to mind Central Park, roses, and a chunky base of cedarwood, sandalwood and vanilla. Divine.

LIfe With a ViewFinally, a candle that crosses over into beauty product – genius. It’s Janjira Therapy Massage Candle (£34). I’ve seen these in spas but never used one before now, and I love it. The scent is amazing when it’s burning, then you blow it out and use the warmed oil to massage into dry skin. It’s great on cuticles and ideal for softening worn-out summer sandal feet.
