New Season, New Slap

I can’t try and pretend that spring is in the air, weather-wise. But it’s March, allegedly the first day of a new season, and regardless of the fact that I am still wearing snow boots on the nursery run, I am forging ahead with my usual spring makeup edit.

Spring brings extra daylight, warmer temperatures (usually), and a move into more summery clothes – all of which mean that those heavier foundations, berry lip tones and smoky eyes that worked in December are starting to make us look like we didn’t take our makeup off last night.

I’ve switched my heavier cream-to-powder base for Revlon Nearly Naked Makeup (£8.99). This is the least expensive foundation I have used in ages, and it is just lovely. It’s quite runny, but you can just dab it on where you need it and it sinks in beautifully, leaving a better version of your own skin. SPF20 too, for when the sun does break through.

My plummy blusher has had the heave-ho and my new favourite is this fabulous little find from Superdry: their Blush in Burnt Coral (£10), which comes in a cute metal tin. The rubbery wristband thing is arguably a little youthful for me but I can live with that, because the powder is light and easy to blend, and the colour is so fresh and natural. Check out the lip glazes while you’re there.

For eyes, I have swapped a powder shadow for Clinique’s Chubby Stick Shadow Tint for Eyes (£16). Super creamy, I apply it like a thick eyeliner then smudge with my finger. My favourite shade is this one, Massive Midnight, which blends to a subtle navy.

There’s a new trend for eyes that involves applying fibres separately from mascara to build up length and volume. If it seems like a fiddle, try Shavata Extreme Volumising Mascara and Lash Fabricator (£12.75 each) and you will be converted. Just put the mascara on (which is great in its own right), brush on the black fibres, then seal with another coat of mascara. Fluttery in the extreme.

Finally, some spring lips. To go with my peachy blush, I’m wearing Aveda’s Nourish-Mint Sheer Mineral Lip Color (£12.50) in Melochia Bloom, a kind of corally pink. Tastes minty, moisturises lips still chapped from winter winds – what’s not to love? Now, come on, sunshine…
