A Woman For All Seasons

Back in my (early) youth, the word ‘seasonal’ was used only occasionally when discussing the weather with someone of advanced years. These days, it is given a frequent airing – to apply to food, clothes, and of course, products.

So, how seasonal is your cleanser? I have ditched the rinse-off formulas and felt a need for nurturing balms, oils and creams. Not only do they make light work of the extra bit of makeup I tend to wear in the winter, they soothe any dryness caused by central heating and cold winds. Here are my top five.

I’m finding oil cleansers such a great way to dissolve makeup at the end of the day. Pure Lochside’s Organic Orange Cleansing Oil (£16.50) is just divine. Citrussy and refreshing, you can work it right into your mascara without in stinging and it leaves you feeling like you’ve had a facial. Full marks for their muslin cloth, too, which is no flimsy little hanky type affair.

Pure LochsideStill on oils, I have a real soft spot for NUDE’s Perfect Cleansing Oil (£28), which turns into a light milk once you rinse with water. Ultra-gentle, this is my go-to cleanser when my skin is feeling a bit annoyed.

What’s not to love about this deliciously posh-smelling gunk? It de-grimes, calms, revitalises – you can even use it as a soothing mask by leaving it on for 10 minutes.

A travel size MyChelle Creamy Pumpkin Cleanser (£9 for 60ml), is perfect for a quick, gentle and nourishing cleanse before you step back out into the cold.

And finally, just because it’s winter, it doesn’t mean you put your exfoliation on hold. I’m really impressed with BareMinerals Exfoliating Treatment Cleanser (£19). It’s a powder that you mix, in the style of the Body Shop’s bean thing of the 1980s, in your palm. It’s not gritty, but it blitzes those congested areas that are a tell-tale sign of – yup, you’ve guessed it – seasonal skin.
