Finland is one of the most interesting European  destinations for a holiday of any length, Sure, you’re unlikely to see much sunbathing, but there are so many things to see and experiences to be had that you won’t miss the time spent lounging around the pool at all.

Whether you’re heading to Finland sometime soon, or you’re simply thinking about giving the destination a go, take a look at these things you must do when you visit Finland:

Visit Alvar Alto

The Finns are immensely proud of Alvar Alto, and they are right to be because it is one of the most amazing pieces of 20th Century architecture you are likely to find anywhere in the world. The university town where it is located, Jyväskylä, is also a very pleasant place to spend some time, and is even host to the World Rally Championships in August!

Experience 24-Hour Daylight

If you time your visit to Finland to coincide with the country’s Midsummer, you will get to experience a whole 24 hours of daylight! During this time, Finns get even more active than usual, so you can experience the authentic outdoor life then spend the whole night partying if you visit in Midsummer.

Visit Santa

If you’re traveling with children, you won’t want to miss out on a quick trip to Lapland, where you can meet none other than Father Christmas himself. Spend time sledding, feeding his reindeer and generally soaking up the magical atmosphere.

See the Aurora Borealis

The Aurora Borealis, or northern lights, as they are often referred to is one of the most spectacular natural sights you could ever hope to see, so if you are in Finland, which is prime northern lights spotting territory, you should really make an effort to see them. Northern lights experts will be able to assist you in picking the perfect time for your trip if seeing the lights is a priority.

Go Skiing

If you’re the sporty type, you’ll be in heaven if you take the time to strap on some skis and check out Finland’s cross-country skiing scene. There are tons of marked tracks all over the country, many of which are located in Finland’s stunning national parks, so you could conceivably spend your whole time skiing and exploring the countryside.

Experience Turku’s Nightlife

Turku is the oldest town in Finland, and it is also one of the best places to party. With spectacular views across the Åland Sea towards Sweden and Stockholm, you can sip cocktails on one of the many floating boat bars while enjoying the views and soaking up the town’s ancient atmosphere.

Go Wild

If you fancy yourself as a bit of an explorer, you could always forget the usual tourist traps and go exploring in the Arctic wilderness, where you will see reindeer herds, snow-capped mountains, and awe-inspiring national parks without being troubled by many other tourists.

As you can see, Finland has so much to offer; it is a great place to travel solo, as a couple or even as a family; just be sure to pack your thermals.
