When it comes to a first car, many overly confident young drivers think bigger is better and liken your suggestion of a smaller car to something their ‘Nan would drive’ and that they ‘wouldn’t be seen dead in’, usually finished off with a grunt or a condescending sigh.

But bigger isn’t always better, in fact, there are plenty of pros that come with having a smaller car – such as being able to fit into a tight space in the multi storey or cheekily squeezing onto the end of a row in a festival car park. It’s time to convince those young drivers small is best, and here are five cars that might just do so:

Fiat 500

These cars aren’t only small and nippy but they’re considered one of the most fashionable vehicles you can buy on the market – as they come in a whole host of bright and pastel shades to complement any look. If expense is an issue then you can even avoid paying outright for a brand new 500; the LeaseCar website offers Fiat 500s for as little as £95.99 a month including VAT!

Ford KA

A classic first driver car, the Ford KA is easy to maintain, small enough to squeeze through the tightest of spaces and great when it comes to fuel economy. KAs are true budget cars, with their interiors stripped back to cut costings and smaller engines that still propel them along due to their lightweight bodies. When it comes to insurance they also fall into the lower bands, which means their size is saving them money that can be spent on those late night drives to McDonalds or for the parking at V Festival – or even a nice meal out for Mum and Dad? You can dream.

Peugeot 206

These cars have been around for a while now and if you find one with relatively low mileage (around the 80,000 mark) and a service history you should encourage the young driver in your life to snap it up – or if you are the young driver reading this then SNAP IT UP! Peugeots are cheap to run, are a good middle ground between a super small car and a larger hatchback and look great. A 1.0-litre, petrol model should do the job when it comes to city driving and is a good fit for a younger driver who won’t be undertaking long journeys.

Nissan Micra

Whether you opt for the bug eyed looking 2004 model or a new design, the Nissan Micra is an ideal small car for young drivers. Its excellent fuel economy (65.7mpg) and low emissions make it a desirable vehicle for those who care about being green and its light steering makes it fun to drive. However, although this make of car is small it makes up for it with the size of the boot that comes in at 1132 litres, ideal for shopping bags, suitcases or just general junk that young drivers end up throwing into the back of their cars.
