72 hours in Ibiza

Ibiza offers everything you need for a bohemian, colourful and eccentric break. Whether you’re a raver or a hippy, the island has plenty to keep you up all night or slow you right down! Yoga on the beach at sunset, or cocktails at dawn-nothing is out of the question. And the newest cabaret club Lio is definitely worth a visit for the wrestlers alone!

The hedonistic party capital of the world, started out as a retreat for hippies tripping out on flower power and acid in the sixties. The sunshine and free love was soon adopted by bohemians and rock stars and anyone with a “free spirit”. If you were hip, cool and anti-establishment, Ibiza was the place to be and although it remained underground, the seed was planted.

Nowadays, the Island cashes in on it’s tourism and for six months every year, the masses descend and play hard across the island; But each area has its own personalities, and you get a different vibe wherever you stay.

The north is still the home of laid back bohemians and free spirits. Yoga and meditation retreats are sprouting up at a rapid rate, with treatments and therapies promising to help with stress, sleep, and celebrities like Jade Jagger, Kate Moss,Noel Gallagher, Lily Allen and Idris Elba using the island as their summer playground

Depending on your holiday goals, will determine where you stay.  I wasn’t in the mood for 72 hours of clubbing, so knew San Antonio was out of the question! Partying all night at super clubs Eden and Es Paradis and roasting on the packed beach all day, was not my idea of fun. Ditto to Playa d’en Bossa-  popular with the beautiful crowd- sun worshippers with super honed bodies, and tattooed groups of guys, this boasts the longest beach of the island and offers a pulsating day bar and nightlife. Expect to see lots of teeny tiny designer bikinis, and fast food places, including Maccie D. Home to superclubs Ushuaïa and Hï Ibiza, this is the place to be if you have heaps of stamina and a perfect bod.

I stayed at the OD in Talamanca, which has just opened its rooftop pool in time for the summer season, and provides amazing views from its rooftop bar.… Not to mention the two other pools on ground level- which means you will never be without a lounger! With local art, sunrise yoga, and Smart Cars for guests to use, this laid back hotel was a little slice of heaven.

You don’t actually have to leave the premises as you can enjoy a leisurely breakfast until 12 noon, which is a god send after a big night out! But you can also enjoy a big night in with most nights hosting live performances and DJs. However if you do want to let your hair down, the OD can get you VIP Access to some of the islands best clubs including Lío, Pacha and Ushuaïa.

Heading there for a three night mini break, I was well aware I should put some party tokens in my sleep bank in preparation! Whether you are a raver or not, life is later in Spain; Expect to eat lunch at 3 and dinner at 10pm.. And time is too precious to waste your day sleeping. People to see and things to do!

Apart from the sun, you will no doubt want to sample the sea. And Ibiza has some of the most talked about beaches in the Med. Being an island, there are countless beaches, but much like the nightlife- where you choose to lay down your towel will dictate the music and crowd. Some beaches are much more private than others, but if you don’t mind kids and other people’s sunspray, stay local.  Hire a car when you arrive (the OD has underground parking for 80 cars) or book a driver and go exploring. Getting around is easy as the roads are well maintained and sign-posted, and if you have Sat Nav on your phone, GPS is your friend.

Asking advice about beaches is like asking someone to choose their favourite child! With so many good ones to pick- it’s almost potluck! Do some research yourself on the beach bars and parking and if you are heading off the beaten track, don’t forget your sunscreen!

Be warned, Ibiza is very liberal, and you will definitely see all shapes and sizes going topless on the public beaches- and probably see some completely nude. Ibiza is famous for its white gold sand, punctuated by the clear Mediterranean sea, and Las Salinas is a popular choice for chillaxing; A narrow beach, you can watch the waves wash up on the shore, and lay back on your beach towel drifting off to sleep to the dreamy Balearic beats.

Playa d’en Bossa is the party beach. Avoid it like the plague if you’re not a fan of stag dos or show offs; It is the longest stretch of beach on the island, with shallow waters, and for this reason is popular with families, hawkers and  happy hours. But it is known as the sunset strip, so you might want to spend one evening soaking up the infamous sunsets!

Conversely, Cala Saladeta is where those in the know go. You have to clamber over rocks to get there, but the powdery soft sand, deep water which is perfect for swimming, and dreamy mojitos, makes this  a hidden gem which peaks in peak season!

Es Cavallet is (one of) the official nudist beaches, but its not compulsory! A slim stretch of white sand  backed by sand-dunes, it is perfect for strolling to the beach bars, and on a clear day you can see Ibiza Town and Formentera- if you aren’t blushing too much.

If you don’t have access to helicopter, opt for a day on a speedboat. Ibiza Delivers will come and pick you up from your local jetty and for the full James Bond experience, whisk you over to the stunning island of Formentera to enjoy the clearest waters known to man. This is a little slice of paradise is 6 km south of Ibiza, and is only accessible by boat. There is nothing more decadent than supping a champagne on board a luxury yacht, whilst bobbing in the crystal clear waters in the sun. Get your skipper to drop you off, and enjoy an afternoon at the (pricey) beach bar or restaurant, or just enjoy the sand and sea.

Apart from the sun, sea and sangria, there are plenty of beautiful things to see and do in Ibiza-  treat yourself to a three night break and then come home and recover!
