Edinburgh Festivities & Events

This is the time of year where the world and its slightly inebriated granny descends on the Athens of the North with a fervour not seen outside the heady August days of the Fringe and Festival. As you would expect from Stylenest though, we can help to sort the wheat from the chaff with the pick of the best Edinburgh festivities and events

As the song says, if you get caught between the moon and New York City, the best that you can do is fall in love. If you get caught between the moon and Edinburgh, the best that you can do is go to the pub.

One thing that is transparent throughout the city is that you’re never short of place to go for a drink. To that end, there have been a few new stars in the Edinburgh bar firmament; all distinct but equally raising the bar and ensuring that the calibre can exceed the volume. Instant in-the-know points and delicious libations at the fabulous Panda & Sons, Devil’s Advocate, and Lucky Liquor.

There are galleries and museums aplenty in the city centre, with the National Museum of Scotland a great spot for kids to explore and interact. Meanwhile, the National Galleries of Scotland are offering a range of events; this weekend sees showings of classic family Christmas films in the National Gallery.

Another real treat is Jerry’s Map at Summerhall, an incredible interactive art installation which compels kids and intrigues adults in equal measure.

Elsewhere there are events and treats galore to discover for couple and families alike; Limbo is attracting rave reviews during its limited run for 12 and above, while The Lion King has been camped out at the Playhouse delighting all ages (if planning on going, check out Steak for dinner should you be omnivores, or nip for a drink at the bar at 12 Picardy Place or the excellent Voodoo Rooms). If all that doesn’t float you boat, you can always find a Panto (Oh No you can’t).

Nearby, the Forth Floor at Harvey Nichols has a stunning brasserie, restaurant and bar with breathtaking views, while the store itself offers consistent excellence. Should retail therapy appeal, there are some great boutiques and treats to be found while wandering; Dick’s and Common People raising the menswear game, and Life Story offering curated, thoughtful delights for all the family. In the Old Town, you can find stunning contemporary tweed stylings to update the Scottish country set look at Walker Slater.

Hogmanay, of course, sees the city become a mecca for bemused tourists, lubricated backpackers and locals alike. However, there is perpetual activity in the city centre as part of Edinburgh’s Christmas celebrations, with big wheels, fairs, carousels and performances amongst the remarkably good-natured throngs. Amongst the ceilidhs, bars and clubs ongoing as well, should you not find yourself indoors with family, friends and industrial strength cocktails like me, check out the fabulous Mardi Gras at Midnight, or Guilty Pleasures at Summerhall.

Edinburgh is such that you could safely ignore all of the above and stumble across wonders throughout the city centre and beyond.

Whatever you do, though, and wherever you are, I hope that the Festive Season is good to you and yours. Slainte!
