Joe Allen London

Joe Allen's Hero BurgerStyleNest stopped by theatreland’s iconic American brasserie Joe Allen in London for a bite or two of their not so secret burger.

A landmark of Covent Garden, Joe Allen’s has been a favourite amongst Londoner’s and tourists since 1977 when restaurateur Joe Allen and business partner, Richard Polo opened their first London branch, a sister site to their New York venue of PJ Clarke’s.

Famously recognised (or unrecognised) for its anonymity and underground style, Joe Allen’s sits on a somewhat quiet street moments from the bustling Piazza and simply marked by a small brass plaque by the entrance.

Today, 36 years on and restaurateurs Lawrence Hartley and Tim Healy have taken over the reins theatregoers most loved venue.

Located in the heart of London’s theatre district, the American cuisine restaurant is located in the basement amongst decades of theatre memorabilia.

The casual and relaxed atmosphere makes Joe Allen the place to see and be seen before and after theatregoing.

As StyleNest were shown to our seats, we were pleased to see that all original Joe Allen attributes were still in tact – pianist…check, warm wooden chairs…check and of course the posters, however, with a few fresh additions.

So what’s changed? A refreshed menu offers subtle tweaks not to disappoint any regulars as well as inviting new twists for newcomers. With a new contemporary menu as well as revamped dining room sees an up to date but yet still original Joe Allen’s.

After perusing the menu, StyleNest opted for a starter from the set menu with grilled halloumi, broccoli and lentil salad, followed by a main of London’s best-kept secret burger. Not on the menu, those in the know order the burger at Joe Allen’s and with London’s latest burger craze, Joe Allen’s still remains a firm favourite.

With a choice of classic American dishes including chopped salad, Caesar salad, chilli con carne, steak and lobster mac n’ cheese, Joe Allen’s offers a range of hearty dishes that will suit your appetite any day of the week.

For dessert, StyleNest sampled the strawberry, jelly and peanut ice cream for an infusion of peanut butter and jelly in a grownup dessert.

With exposed brickwork lining the walls and the music from the piano soaking through the atmosphere, Joe Allen’s is not only a landmark of London but also, a modest destination for authentic American cuisine.
