This week’s Covetable are the Persol 649 54 Caffé Polarised Acetate Sunglasses. The classic D-frame sunnies should be top of every man’s summer wish list.
While they may inevitably spend more time on your head or in their case thanks to the vagaries of a British Summer, few things come in handier, or can convince of greater sophistication than reality dictates than a great pair of sunnies.
Persol was founded in Turin in 1917 making technical glasses for pilots and sport drivers, and the 649 was apparently designed for the city’s tram drivers in 1957.
Regardless of their impeccable legacy, this model (with a colourway from 1968), and indeed pretty much their entire range are benchmark function, quality and effortless style.
We may never have the cool of Steve McQueen or the Italian gents who have sported them for decades, but for timeless, retro wonder you’ll be hard pushed to do better.
