Covetable – Adidas Rod Laver

Adidas Rod Laver (1)As will become abundantly clear in the coming weeks and months I spend far too much time thinking about shoes and trainers. It’s borderline absurd.

You may have noticed as well that numerous fashionistas have declared the Adidas Stan Smith the trainer of the year thanks to Phoebe Pilo and others; some great collabs (including the Bedwin and the Heartbreakers offering) have upped the ante. As a brand as well Adidas have taken the perpetually irate Kanye West, and legendary brand collaborator Pharrell on board in recent months to stem the perennial hypebeast obsession with Nike.

All of that matters not a jot for Covetable, though. In my humble opinion Adidas never got it more right than in 1970 with the unremittingly simple loveliness of the Rod Laver, which is being reissued in the coming months. The lesser seen Nastase used the same silhouette with the ubiquitous three stripes, but it’s the Laver you can rely on.

Whether you’re going for 70s country club, terrace (football or villa), or just don’t want to look like a walking disaster area in the smart-casual stylings, the Rod Laver is a genuine classic. Now to dig my old ones out…..
