There a plenty of things to consider when choosing your outfit of the day. The colour, the day’s weather, how quickly you can switch it to a night time look for the after work party. But one thing you might not ever consider is exactly what some of those clothing items are doing to your body. Most of the time you’re not at any risk from your clothes, but there’s a chance that clothes that you wear every day could secretly be hurting your body. Here are just a few items that you might want to look twice at if you want to avoid damaging yourself.

Leggings

There’s no denying that leggings are some of the most comfortable clothes you can own. Soft, stretchy, convenient. It feels like they’re perfect for practically any outfit. But that comes at a cost. Legs don’t offer much room for your skin, so they have a tendency to rub against your skin a lot. Combine that with the amount of movement in your legs if you’re up and about all day and they also absorb a lot of sweat and oil too. That means that your favourite comfy clothes might end up being absolutely disgusting. If you wear them without washing more than once, you’re putting yourself in danger of all sorts of fungal infections.

High heels

Every girl’s best friend can secretly be doing some serious damage! You might not be able to feel it but wearing high heels regularly can cause serious long-term muscle damage to your feet and ankles. Luckily there are exercises you can do to keep your muscles stretched and balanced. If you find yourself feeling any discomfort from years of strutting your stuff in nine-inch heels, consider seeing a foot specialist. You might have to switch to wearing flats more often but, let’s face it; that’s a small price to pay for your health.

Your favourite pajamas

We all love getting into our favourite pair of pajamas, but it’s a good idea to make sure you’re always putting on a clean pair! People tend not to think about night wear, but when you sleep, a lot of sweat and oil can get into the fabric. Putting on dirty pajamas can get bacteria close to your urethra, putting you at risk of infection. The best thing to do is keep them clean or at least wear clean underwear underneath them every night.

Skinny jeans

“Please no! Not the skinny jeans too!” We once thought of them as the greatest invention in fashion history but, tragically, even skinny jeans can do you some harm if you’re not careful. The extreme tightness that these jeans impose on your legs can cause pressure. This pressure can result in varicose veins, swelling and even nerve damage! This can cause numbness in the legs if they are subjected to it too frequently. The hot, restrictive environment that skinny jeans produce can also cause yeast infections. It looks like some things really are too good to be true.
