Now, I’ve had fat-freezing before, which didn’t work for me at all, so I wasn’t expecting miracles but in my mission to get rid of my post-baby ‘pouch’ I was more than willing to give it a go.
SculpSure is the first FDA-cleared laser treatment for non-invasive lipolysis (the breaking down of fat). It uses a diode laser (a ‘straight’ laser on one wavelength) to target and heat fat under the skin, the water molecules in the fat cells expand with the heat and burst the fat cells from within. The broken cells are then removed from the body via our lymphatics. So far so good!
SculpSure is not a miracle fix for obesity though, I’m afraid, it is designed for stubborn pockets of fat that won’t seem to budge with diet or exercise, such as; my post baby pouch, ‘muffin-tops’, upper arms and annoying saddle bags- although I should say, results seem to be much better on newer soft fat pockets rather than your genetic body shape. However, the best news is once these cells are removed, they can’t come back!
I have a high pain threshold, but I am very sensitive to temperature extremes, so when my therapist, Annele, told me the pads that she had strapped to my stomach were going to heat up and cool down over the next 25 minutes, I was a bit nervous. The treatment starts by cooling the area in preparation for the heat and then the heat starts…. it was horrible! It was like a hot iron pressing into me and just when I thought I couldn’t take any more, it released and cooled down again, before repeating over and over throughout the treatment! Annele was brilliant and kept me talking throughout the treatment to take my mind off it- and I kept telling myself that 25 minutes of pain in order to get my flat stomach back, was totally doable! It’s worth noting that different people are sensitive in different areas and I am a total wimp when it comes to heat!
Immediately after the treatment I felt fine but the following day, as expected, I was very tender and swollen in the treated area. This lasted for nearly 2 weeks, it didn’t affect me in any way, but I did avoid wearing anything tight around my waist as the swelling was noticeable to me. It is very important to massage the area for a few minutes, twice a day every day for six weeks- please do not spend your hard-earned money on a treatment and then not bother with the aftercare! It makes a huge difference to your results- you should want to massage those broken fat cells the hell out of your body anyway!
After 6 weeks, I went back for my second appointment and looking at my before pictures, I was surprised to see a bonus side-effect of the treatment; my skin looked much tighter! Annele told me this is very common but not guaranteed so they don’t ever make these claims. Yay! I got back on the treatment couch thinking I’d be tougher second time around but I wasn’t- it was still agony!
It’s now 12 weeks after my first treatment and I am happy to report that my baby paunch is no more! I stuck to my aftercare advice; massage, exercise, drinking lots of water, and now the annoying little pocket of fat is gone!
I think the reason SculpSure worked so well for me was because it actively seeks out the fat cells and attacks them, whereas the fat-freezing I had before wasn’t fine-tuned to target only the fat. This is not to say fat-freezing doesn’t work at all but for me to get the same results as SculpSure I imagine I would have needed many more freeze treatments, and who’s got time for that?! I’m just gutted bikini season is over!
