The overnight test

Have you tried an overnight mask? I’m a little bit obsessed with them. Not only do they take the waiting time out of ‘masking’ (because you’re asleep), they also make sure you wake up looking all perky – which in the depths of winter can only be a good thing.

So what’s the difference between an overnight mask and a night cream? Masks are much more intensive treatments, and you probably only need to use one once or twice a week. Try Sunday, so you start the week all gorgeous, or slap one on when you get home after a night out and see if anyone can guess you’ve got a hangover the next day. Here are my top five.

First up is from Origins, who know a thing or two about masks. Drink Up Intensive Overnight Mask (£23) contains Japanese seaweed to repair your skin’s barrier and prevent future dehydration – perfect for central heating ravaged complexions. Sinks in beautifully and smells delish.

Origins

New Drops of Youth Bouncy Sleeping Mask (£22) from The Body Shop is my go-to the night before a ‘do’. It has a strange (but not unpleasant) rubbery kind of texture and in spite of being a bit sticky (put it on about an hour before you hit the hay), does really ensure you wake up looking ‘bouncier’.

Body Shop

From Nuriss is Turn Back Time Overnight Stem Cell Mask (£65). This goes on like a thin film and tightens, although not uncomfortably. You can leave it on for half an hour or overnight if you prefer. It uses plant stem cells from Acai palm, Chinese basil and white oak tree to fight free radical damage while you sleep – I find this one very calming on upset skin.

NurissBrand new from Base Formula is the purse-friendly Revitalising Overnight Mask (£12). This is my current favourite if my skin is bumpy and hormonal – it revitalises all skin types while you sleep, unclogs pores and smells delicious, thanks to its orange oil, bergamot and neroli.

Base FormulaFinally, from Clinique is Moisture Surge Overnight Mask (£30). If, like me, you adore the way that all the Moisture Surge products seem to hydrate without a hint of greasiness, you’ll love this mask too. Apply a layer after your usual night-time routine and wake up stroking your cheek in amazement at its softness. No, really.
