The old ones are the best

Call me old-fashioned. I’m serious – I love being a bit yester-year, especially when it comes to my products. I don’t mean powder puffs and rouge, I mean mixing up the latest formulations with a bit of age-old beauty knowledge. I always get excited when I find a product that has even more history than me, so I thought I’d share my five favourites with you.

First up is Pommade Divine (£20). I use this amazing balm every day, on me and the kids and on anything from dry skin to insect bites and spots to burns. It is possibly magical, and the formula is actually hundreds of years old. It even smells old-fashioned, of cloves and nutmeg and corsets. OK maybe not corsets. Get some though.

Next is from a site called Roullier White that I defy you not to fall in love with. I want everything they sell, but for now I’m going to tell you about Mrs White’s Rose Youth Serum (£25). Mrs White’s cleaning and beauty recipes were the result of 20 years of working as a maid in London’s grandest homes in the 1920’s. She concocted potions, gathered from her own experience, which really worked. This cracker uses rosehip oil as its hero ingredient.

Olverum (£23.50) is a must-try bath oil created by a German wine merchant who made regular visits to his favourite spa in the mountains and was treated with a therapeutic bath oil. One year, he was told the bath oil was no longer available so on his return home he resolved to recreate it. In 1931, after two years of experimentation, he arrived at the current formulation, which is a wonderfully aromatic, stress-busting oil.

Clinique’s Dramatically Different Moisturising Lotion was developed nearly half a century ago. It was updated recently, and now Clinique has brought out a cream version of the iconic lotion (£25). I just love this – it’s one of those moisturisers that my skin just seems to drink up and say ‘thank you’ afterwards.

Finally, another personal favourite that I actually didn’t know had been around so long. Philip Kingsley’s hero product, Elasticizer, was originally made for Audrey Hepburn, and now he has brought out a Geranium & Neroli version (£31.50) inspired by annual trips to Portofino – infused with neroli, geranium, lavender, rose and orange oils. Gorgeous.
