The eyes have it

And by ‘it’, I mean an unwelcome freak-out of the skincare variety. This is really unusual for me – I’m not allergic to anything, but recently my eyelids have got very grumpy and stopped liking all my usual eye creams. How inconsiderate of them.

They’ve gone red, itchy and have even started to look a bit crepey and dry, too. Time to call in some new products – so I’ve picked five of my favourite sensitive eye creams I’ve been testing recently, in case you or someone you know is having an issue in that area. Here they are.

First up is Burt’s Bees Sensitive Eye Cream (£14.99), which contains cotton extract to help skin replenish its outer layer and minimise the effects of potential irritants, as well as aloe to soothe. I love this in the morning when my eyes are really misbehaving as it seems to last all day.

Burt's Bees

Now for something purse-friendly from Simple – a great little back-up if you occasionally feel the need for something soothing on your peepers: Kind To Eyes Soothing Eye Balm (£3.99). For under a fiver you’re getting nothing posh but this might just do the job if your usual fancy essential oil packed serum is making you look like you’ve just watched Beaches.

Simple

Equally thrifty is M&S Formula Daily Care Sensitive Eye Cream (£4). This is my go-to when my eyes want nothing on other than something to calm them down and add a bit of hydration. No frills but a bathroom cabinet essential these days.

M&S

From Bioderma is Sensibio Eye Contour Gel (£14). This is the one I reach for these days in the morning if I’m looking a little puffy, as it seems to reduce that ‘night on the Shiraz’ look without the stinging feeling I’ve been getting recently from some of my de-puffing eye gels. Makes a great non-greasy base for eye makeup too.

Bioderma

Finally, some TLC for when your eye area, like mine, has been stressed out for weeks on end. Origins Eye Doctor (£28.50) is especially designed for fragile skin around the eyes that is showing crinkly dry lines. This hydration hardworker uses cucumber, rosemary and energising ginseng to sort our puffiness, crepey skin and dark shadows. Looks fab on your bathroom shelf, too.
