We’re a month into the full-on central heating and sure enough, my skin is starting to get a bit annoyed with the relentless dehydration that comes with it. But this year I’ve got a new weapon in my armoury.
I’ve recently discovered the joys of a hydrating mask. What I like about them is that they deliver a surge of hydration, without me having to leave anything on my skin that feels too rich. Perfect if you’ve woken up with that ‘tight’ feeling and need a pre-shower boost before you face the cold winds outside. Here are my top five.
This morning I reached for La Roche Posay Hydraphase Intense Masque (£15.50). I’ve got a bit of a winter cold and my skin felt dry and the area around my nose was red. This was perfect – a cooling, scent-free pale blue cream-gel that just cocoons your face in calmness.
If I’m still feeling dehydrated this evening, I’m going to put on Clinique’s new Moisture Surge Overnight Mask (£29). I’ve always liked the pale peachy gels of the Moisture Surge range and this mask is no exception. I love the way it plumps and hydrates without a hint of oiliness – just slap it on after your usual routine and wake up like a dewy spring flower. Kind of.
As a super-luxe treat, Sepai Nutritive Instant Mask (£91) is the business. You massage it on, and it serves either as a restoring mask or a cleansing balm. This is hardworking stuff – like all Sepai products, containing ‘at least 13 state-of-the-art active ingredients’. It gave my skin a ‘just left the spa’ smoothness.
For a pre-party burst of hydration, I’ve got two favourites. First is Docteur Renaud Raspberry Hydrating Programme Cosmekit (£22.50). It’s a one-off use product but think of it as an at-home facial. You get an exfoliator, a massage (following specific directions) and then use the pot as a shaker to make a raspberry foaming mask. I got my toddler to help and it was great fun – but left my cheeks smoothed and peachy too.
Finally, Crystal Clear 10 Minute Glow (£24.99). It’s a peel-off mask which again, is always fun. But forget the astringent lemon ones from the Eighties: this is a hydrating, plumping pick-me-up which is a godsend when you’ve got a night out and look like you (urgently) need a night in.
