Losing an hour is not entirely convenient

Remember when you were about eight, and you never wanted to go to bed? Imagine NOT WANTING TO GO TO BED. How insane. I always want to go to bed – sadly, life, work, children and whatever’s on BBC4 frequently get in the way. Which is why the clocks going forward this weekend, although an exciting development in terms of it not being winter any more, is also a cruel, cruel trick.

But there is salvation, in the shape of some tiredness-busting beautifiers that in a previous incarnation you might have used when you’d been out clubbing until 5am. Except you wouldn’t have needed them, because you were 23 and looked good even when you hadn’t slept. Pah.

Firstly, install your offspring with some educational entertainment (by which I mean CBeebies, obviously) and then smooth on a mask that will make you look like you had extra sleep instead of less. I’ve been trying out Collin Resultime Lifting Minute Mask (£33.75), a gorgeously pale pink little number that slides on a treat and energises your complexion in just five minutes.

Collin ResultimeEven hastier is Super 3-Minute Facial by Dr Nicholas Perricone (£37), which uses ginger to warm your skin and stimulate circulation. And it smells more like spiced cookies than a stir-fry, which I found a huge relief.

While your mask is working, give your tired old peepers some attention using Repêchage Eye Rescue Pads with Seaweed & Natural Tea Extracts (£27 for 60). An upmarket version of the far-less-pleasant tea bag, these reduce puffiness in the time it takes for Mister Maker to do something imaginative with some cotton buds and a bit of playdough. I’m keeping mine in the fridge, next to the Sauvignon Blanc. By way of a warning.

Then it’s into the shower, armed with Dove Spa Make Me Feel Recharged Bath & Shower Gel (£10), which goes for ginger too, but this time with lemon, orange blossom, guarana – and a lather that will make you forget it’s really 5.30am.

Dove Spa shower gelFinally, something for your hair. It might not need sleep, but good hair will make you feel a whole lot better about starting the day an hour early. Young Again by Kevin Murphy (£22.95) is a leave-in treatment oil that is anything but oily and smells wonderfully luxurious.

Now off to the soft play with you.
