Layers Are Very This Season

I’m not talking about clothes – I’m talking about skincare. When people tell me I look well, I either accept the compliment graciously, or appal/intrigue them (depending on who it is) with how many layers of products have gone into achieving the ‘fresh as a daisy’ look that I sometimes manage to achieve.

One of the layers I find essential is a serum. If you’re already using one, fabulous – have a look at my current five favourites below. And if you’re not, it might be a good time of year to work one into your routine. They’re a great way of helping your skin cope with seasonal changes and strange temperatures like the ones we’ve been having this week.

My first pick is perfect for settling down skin that’s been upset by cold winds. Calm Serum (£44) is by S5, a skincare range specifically designed for stressed skin. This serum contains marine bioactives to help reduce redness – it’s more like a very light lotion, which sinks in beautifully with a fresh smell, and I can see it being just as handy in hot weather.

Next is my go-to when I need to get rid of that tightness that comes from dehydration. It’s Nurture Protect Moisture Boosting Serum (£11.95). This is a real hard worker – it smells of pretty much nothing, it’s purse friendly, and it gives that extra layer of cooling moisture when you need it. I like it after a swim, because chlorine always dries out my skin.

Similarly plumping is Earth Science Beta-Ginseng Cellagen Renewal Serum (£20.99: for stockists call 020 7720 1441), which contains 25% Hyaluronic Acid, along with raspberry and beta-ginseng. I’m a fan of its classic, slightly honey-like serum texture, which leaves not a scrap of stickiness.

While we’re plumping, I have to tell you about the Clarins new Double Serum (£55), which is rather amazing to be honest. It contains 20 plant extracts that ‘boost skin’s vital functions’. It’s one of those ones you really notice when you don’t use. A real skin perfector.

Finally, a serum specifically for radiance, which I find perfect for lack of sleep and when you’ve ‘guessed’ what a measure of gin is a few times the night before. Pukka’s Radiance Serum (£27) contains a blend of Ayurvedic herbs, and has a gorgeously herbal scent. A great pick-me-up.
