Double duty

Is cleansing all that your cleanser does? How lazy of it. I want my cleansers to do other things too, like work as a masque or even exfoliate. We spend all day multi-tasking after all, so why shouldn’t our products?

I’m talking balms you can leave on longer to calm and hydrate, masques that rinse off in the shower just like a cleanser, and milky lotions that blitz makeup but work as a masque as well. Who doesn’t love a hybrid? Here are my top five.

First up is Willowbee Mask & Cleanse (£59.40) from Heaven. It has an uncanny ability to deep cleanse and refine, while firming and moisturising at the same time. Deliciously scented, it contains rose and lavender oil, as well as shea butter and marshmallow. I slap it on while I’m making the packed lunches in the morning, then jump in the shower and rinse off.

Heaven

Another morning favourite is Kale Enzymatic Exfoliating Cleanser (£16.50) from Nourish. It’s quite the superfood product: it contains pomegranate enzymes to gently exfoliate and organic kale to increase suppleness. I love that you can use this as a quick rinse-off cleanser, leave on for longer as a masque, or massage in as a kind of mini-facial. Perfect as a pre-party booster.

Nourish

My go-to for break-outs and dullness is Aesop Parsley Seed Facial Cleansing Masque (£27). Even though this dries on your face (it has a clay base), it doesn’t make your skin feel tight when you remove it, which is probably down to the aloe vera. Also a bit obsessed with Aesop packaging.

When I’m after something more soothing, I love applying my Face Matters 24/7 Balm (£55) before I soak in the bath – or even before bed as an overnight treatment. It’s a cleansing balm that contains collagen to restore and plump, and leaves skin so soft it’s quite disconcerting. This is an occasional treatment for my normal/combination skin but if you have a dry or mature complexion you’ll be hooked.

Finally, Embryolisse, one of those ‘cult classics’ that thoroughly deserves the title. It’s been around since 1950, and the Lait-Crème Concentré (£13) doubles as a cleanser, moisturiser, masque, after-shave cream… you name it. I love this old school beauty secret which is used behind the scenes on photo shoots and catwalks the world over. A great pick-me-up after a late (boozy) night.
